Umbria is often referred to as the 'green heart of Italy'. More sheltered by external influences than other Italian regions, it has thankfully retained many of its traditions and flavors of the past. Umbria is a wonderful region, with hills, forests, streams, valleys and a vast historicala and artistic heritage. It is still relatively unspoilt and not overwhelmed by mass tourism. Giomici Castle provides an excellent base from where to discover the region. Guests often opt for a day visit to Perugia, the region's capital, and Assisi, with its extraordinary frescoes by Giotto which are located in the Basilica of San Francesco. Another favourite is the ancient city of Orvieto, where you can find one of Italy's largest cathedrals which is one of the largest Gothic buildings in the country. Other destinations not far away are lesser-known, such as the beautiful hill town of Todi, or Gubbio, with one of the best medieval centres in Italy, or Spoleto, considered by many to be the most impressive of Umbrian towns. Also we should not forget Trasimeno Lake, the largest lake in central Italy and it offers some excellent leisure and water sports opportunities. Of course there is the Marmore's Falls, Roman built water falls which are located in a natural setting of incomparable beauty. Several of Italy's famous tourist destinations are within a two-hour drive, including Rome, Siena, Arezzo and Florence. Therefore, choosing Giomici Castle as a base, gives our guests the opportunity to visit some amazingly wonderful places and the time spent here will always seem too short!
