Illuminating the city with candles placed on the buildings is a tradition that dates back to 1688. That year the urn containing the relics of St. Ranieri was placed in the Chapel of the Incoronata in the Cathedral dedicated to the saint. Cosimo II de 'Medici wanted that the ancient urn with the remains of the saint were replaced with a more sumptuous and modern. The transposition of the relics turned out the 'perfect opportunity to create a memorable party in the city, according to tradition it is this day that marks the birth of the Illuminations. From here 'on the event has been held annually except for a few interruptions.
The custom of papering the city with candles, not born with luminara but first: in those days were celebrated as the most special events, such as when Princess Margaret Louise of Orleans came in 1662 in the city to visit the wife of Cosimo de 'Medici II. Today, however, the party has taken a precise shape: architectural perimeters of palaces, churches, towers and bridges along the Arno (cornices, windows, doors, balconies) are recreated with wooden frames.
On these frames are arranged a number of candles that are lit after sunset. Every year there are more than 70,000 candles that riflettondosi Arno, create a fairytale atmosphere; other lights instead are placed directly on the water of the river to create color vibrations. The city on the river bank shines continuously, all night. It is also lit up the perimeter of the walls around the Square of Miracles and the Leaning Tower of Pisa: a series of oil lamps reproduce the profile of the leaning tower.
At about 23:00 the evening continues with a fireworks display from the Old Citadel, to enjoy the most of the fires, should go down the river.

Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Its landscape, artistic heritage and important cities, first of all Florence, make Tuscany an unquestioned protagonist of world tourism. In this region, nature has many different facets, starting from the coast that alternates long and sandy beaches, like the Versilia beach, with rocky cliffs and steep headlands. The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, a crystal-clear sea and rich seabeds, are peerless.
You can admire sceneries of uncontaminated nature in the Apuane Alps and in several protected areas, like Orbetello lagoon, which houses many species of migrant birds, including pink egrets.
However, the most typical sceneries of the region are those that merge the beauty of nature with the millenary work of man. The amazing Gulf of Baratti and the sites of Vetulonia, Vulci and Pitigliano guard necropolis and vestiges of the Etruscan civilization, while Roselle and Cosa evoke memories of the Roman Age.
Medieval villages, historical towns, castles and defence tems, rural churches (the so-called 'pievi') and beautiful abbeys, like the one of Sant'Antimo, are scattered all over the territory and their profiles stand out in the landscapes of the Crete Senesi, Orcia Valley, Garfagnana, Chianti and the Maremma.
Finally, Tuscany is full of spas: Montecatini, Saturnia, Montepulciano, Monsummano and Bagno Vignoni, which offer relaxing holidays thanks to their thermal waters and well-equipped facilities for all types of treatment.
The provinces of the region are: Florence (regional capital), Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
