The Historic Carnival of Ivrea is a unique event, recognized as Italian event of international importance, such as communication of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers of 27.09.1956 (page no. 02999/894 of prot.), A dream that manifests every year bringing in the streets and squares of the city of Ivrea history, tradition, entertainment, excitement and great ideals. In this event history and legend intertwine to create a spectacular sequence that crosses and blends the centuries.
The spirit of the Historic Carnival lives in commemoration of an episode of liberation from tyranny, which dates back to the Middle Ages: a baron who starved the City was driven away thanks to the rebellion of the daughter of a miller who refused to submit to the jus de seigneur and lit the popular uprising. This commemoration Carnival takes place every year as big Civic Party during which the community of Ivrea celebrates its ability to self-determination.
The heroine of the festival is the Miller's wife, at his side, General, that since the early '800 has the task of ensuring the smooth running of the event, along with his Napoleonic General Staff, made up of talented officers on horseback and graceful Sutler .
Completing the gallery of historical figures the Deputy Grand Chancellor, the Magnifico Podesta' guarantor of liberty town, the Procession with the Flags of the Districts represented by Abba and the Pipes and Drums.
A fill of colors and perfumes the city, there is the famous and spectacular Battle of the Oranges, moment of great involvement and strong emotion, recalling the popular rebellion against tyranny.
In the battle the people, represented by orange throwers on foot without any protection, fought with oranges against the armies of the feudal lord, represented by shooters on horse-drawn carriages, wearing caps and masks reminiscent of ancient armor.
As a sign of participation in the festival all citizens and visitors from Fat Thursday, taking to the streets wearing the Phrygian cap, a red hat shaped sock is the ideal adhesion to revolt and then the aspiration for freedom, as it was for the protagonists of the French Revolution.

Aosta Valley is the smallest region in Italy and is in the north-west, between France and Switzerland. Its core is its majestic peaks in this mainly mountainous region, centred around the highest parts of the Alps; Cervino, Mount Rosa, Gran Paradiso and the king of them all, Mont Blanc, which at 4810 metres is the highest mountain in Europe: it is the roof of the old Continent. Those who are not familiar with mountaineering can use the comfor yet spectacular cable car, which can be caught a few kilometres from Courmayeur, one of the most important ski resorts in the world.
In this setting of stately mountains and different types of valley, sits the oldest National Park, the Gran Paradiso, where it is still possible to see animals in their natural habitat - ibex, chamois, eagles and marmots live in vegetation which changes according to the surrounding environment.
Historically, the Aosta Valley has been viewed as land of contact and fusion between Italy and France, which is reflected in its official bilingualism and its special autonomous region status. The great modern tunnels of Gran San Bernardo and, even more so, Mont Blanc, an engineering masterpiece that ends up in France, highlight even more clearly this aspect of intersection between Italy and the rest of Europe.
The only province of the region is Aosta (regional capital).
