The 23 August 1973 was staged the first concert. Music in the natural theater of Villalago Piediluco very close to Terni. The program included the Aktuala, a group long gone (with the benefit of hindsight, it seems their world music) and the orchestra maistream of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. The first edition included three nights, two to Perugia and Gubbio, but was eliminated by the rain. In Perugia, in the Piazza IV Novembre, they made their debut Italian Weather Report, and did much to discuss the performance of free-esoteric Solar Arkestra Sun Ra. It soon became evident that it was a good idea, as testified to the great success, despite a rough promotion. In fact the gestation of the project was fast: from vision to concrete realization passed few months. Umbria Jazz was born in a cafe, now closed, the historic center of Perugia. For some time, Carlo Pagnotta, trader Perugia jazz fan and long-time frequenter of the biggest festivals in Europe, dreamed of a festival in his home. He spoke with two prominent members of the then newly formed Region of Umbria (both would later become presidents) that showed to like the idea and involved their colleague to tourism. It was drawn up an artistic program of mass with the intervention of Alberto Alberti, then the main manager of the Italian jazz musicians, and the proposal went in the bargain. It was approved. Cities and squares of Umbria in the days of Umbria Jazz, crowd. In some cases even the musicians have had difficulty in reaching the place where they have to play; even the orchestra of Count Basie got stuck in the traffic of the spectators. The year 1976 saw the stage George Coleman, Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie. In this period in Umbria comes a lot of people and a part of the public, highly politicized, it tends to create problems of various kinds: in Italy are so-called years of lead. Even the music was saved: they booed great artists like Chet Baker and Stan Getz, white and middle class. Equally on, of course, was the comparison between the local political forces and in cultural circles. To avoid any risk, the organizers called off the 1977 edition. After much controversy, in 1978 he returned to reorganize the festival, with a formula that tries in vain to limit the influx of spectators every evening they went on stage two concerts in different cities. The festival thus became unwieldy. Edition of 1978 not more followed until 1982. It served a pause for reflection. The event was revived in 1982 with many changes and regional authorities and tourism promotion not enter more in the management. She introduced, for the first time, the entrance ticket for the concerts most important. In the early days there was reference to the structure of ARCI, an associative reality at the time very strong in Umbria. In 1985 the Association was born Umbria jazz, non-profit organization, which manages the brand Umbria Jazz, owned by the Region, which operates since then the festival in all its aspects (formula, artistic choices, organization, logistics, sponsorships). Some years later, by the Region, he was born the Fondazione Umbria Jazz, which has the task of ensuring the financial resources of the public. The current president of the Foundation is Renzo Arbore, while Carlo Pagnotta (one of the originators of the event) it is artistic director. The second feature of the new UJ is the permanence: it is no longer a touring festival, but is only held in Perugia. Indeed, in the early years, we try the experience of the decentralization, with poor results: the festival takes place almost everything in Perugia, with some concerts but held in Terni, Narni, Orvieto, Foligno, Gubbio, Citta' di Castello and Assisi. The recovery of the festival was held in a circus tent in the area of Pian di Massiano (near the stadium), well away from the historic center, a kind of confinement because the problems of the seventies had not been forgotten. Evening concerts are held in the gardens of the Pediment; among the artists we can mention Sonny Rollins, Randy Crawford, Michel Petrucciani, Phil Collins, Al Jarreau and Keith Jarrett.

What is looming, for the great desire of the artists themselves who participate in collective action, like a true show poster suitable to the recovery of manual dexterity, born from the need to rediscover capable; able to draw, to model, to mix the colors. Rediscover, revalue the historical techniques, returning value to techne, to know how to do with your hands, without losing sight of the modern aesthetic, artistic expression, however, that current can and must deal with the more entrenched culture of craftsmanship. With conceptual art, Arte Povera and Minimalism, the artist has ceased to be a craftsman, has largely denied his dexterity, preferring the negation of the form, the pattern calculated, the rejection of chromatic harmony. But that does not mean it can not be reversed, or even better, the birth of a new line parallel to artists, also of mature academic derivation, which will resume in hand all the techniques and materials to discover the genesis of art. And so was born the project that you see perfectly integrated inside a historical, artistic and architectural, that of manual workers of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries see traces everywhere, the Palace of the Canons of Gubbio, now home to the Diocesan Museum.

The production of olive oil is lost in the mists of time. The first evidence of cultivated olive trees date back to about 6,000 years ago in the Middle East, in what's now Syria. Already at this time the oil, as well as in the kitchen, was used as an ointment, as a fuel for lamps and taken as a medicine. Among the first written above this generous product we find instead the code of Hammurabi, who in 2550 BC instructed the Babylonians on the production and trade of oil. UMBRIA

Everchanging, untouched landscapes in the green of winding valleys make Umbria a region that will never fail to amaze. This region comprises mainly hills, mountains, hollows and plains and extends along the Tiber's central basin. At the heart of the boot, it is the only region with no coastline;. It includes Lake Trasimeno, central Italy's largest lake. The area still has the remains of Etruscan settlements, particularly around Castiglione del Lago, where the loveliness of the natural landscape combines with the romanticism and stillness of the lake. Moving on from the two lakes, we come to the Cascate delle Marmore waterfalls near Terni, one of the most beautiful in Europe. The waters dive into the River Nera with a spectacular 165 metre , and are surrounded by lush vegetation. This is the spot sports lovers who enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and other water fun head for. Still in the province of Terni, tourists looking to get the feel of Umbria should not miss out on two little gems: one of them is linked to history and the other to the territory. Carsulae is an ancient Roman town traversed by the ancient Via Flaminia, where important public buildings have been discovered. We can still see the remains of the S. Damiano Arch, with particularly beautiful and fascinating surroundings. The other gem, closely linked to the area's make-up is the Dunnarobba fossil forest, a rare example of a forest that existed 3 million years ago, with very well preserved tree trunks set in a lunar landscape. The provinces of the region are Perugia (regional capital) and Terni.
