Melissa , a town in the province of Crotone , was born on a rocky ridge , in the hills between the Ionian Sea and the eastern slopes of the Sila Grande. The scenario is typical of a feudal village . Perched on the flanks of a hill , has a charming old town with the remains of an imposing city walls. The scenario that occurs when you go through the historic center , crisscrossed by narrow streets narrow and can only be reached on foot, is one of those charming . The numerous caves scattered around the block , up the track sensitive rural reality that has characterized the country in the past . Mentioned by Ovid in the Metamorphoses , Melissa has ancient origins. The name is clearly derived from the Greek : (lemon balm ) means country of bees and honey. Some attribute it to Cleta , nurse of Queen Penthesilea , others Melissus , king of Crete. These assumptions are related to the news of an Aegean- Mycenaean presence in pre- Hellenic . For others, however , the etymology would be next and just goes back to the Greek colonization on the Ionian coast . There are those who instead it gives the name to the fame of the sorceress Melissa ( contemporary Sibilla Cumana ), which, according to the imagination of its inhabitants lived in these places, hiding in caves and subterranean caves , and from whom he inherited the name. Another allusion would , however, refer to the name of the nymph Melissa : the ancient coat of arms, in fact , contains a carved wood nymph , leaning on a tree trunk , from whose branches hung swarms of bees on honeycombs .

On the promontory of Punta Alice, a town in the countryside of the town of Ciro Marina, were found in 1924 the remains of a large Doric temple dedicated to Apollo Aleo, Thessalian hero Philoctetes, who according to legend, there consecrated his arrows Heracles after the victorious Trojan War. Excavations at Punta Alice, therefore, focus on the Temple of Apollo, around which revolved the entire sacred area, almost certainly of pre-colonial origin. Is just over 20 km from Crotone, the archaeological area of Punta Alice could represent a sacred pre-colonial, incorporated by the Greeks in ancient times and dedicated to Apollo Aleo. The archaeological area of Punta Alice, therefore, is affected by the sanctuary of Apollo Aleo Thessalian hero Philoctetes, here consecrated arrows given to him by Heracles. Originally, the temple of the sixth century B.C. consisted of a cell (naos) strongly elongated, long 27 meters wide and almost 8. The cell was completely open on the east side and divided into two aisles by a colonnade, which remains the foundation stone. The property remained in use until the late fourth century BC when you put the transformation, by the Brett, periptero Doric temple in a larger (46x19), in stone, surrounded by eight columns on the short sides and nineteen on the long ones. The first archaic cell was incorporated in the new building, while the colonnade was doubled on the eastern side. Among the materials found in the archaeological area of Punta Alice emerge, mostly votive offerings of the Archaic period to the Temple of Apollo, the marble parts dell'Acrolito of Apollo, also archaic, head, feet and left hand, exhibited the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria. The phase Brettia of the sanctuary, late fourth century BC back the fragments of architectural terracotta, Doric capitals, column drums and lintels fragments, these stored instead in the nearby Archaeological Museum of Crotone. The archaeological site is affected by the discovery, in close proximity to the Temple of Apollo, some large buildings also refer to the period Brettiian not fully investigated and that are supposed to refer to dedicated facilities to accommodate the pilgrims, as it was for the nearby and more famous sanctuary of Hera and Persephone, near Crotone.

A relaxed human settlement of the IV BC almost certainly related to a city Brettia, was investigated on the hill bordered by streams and Coseria Scarmaci, in the archaeological area of Castiglione di Marshes. On the plateau in front of the village, had been excavated 50 burials of the IX BC accompanied by guns, spears, iron and bronze, brooches, decorated plates and other items. The area of Castiglione di Marshes could hide the ancient city enotra Cossa, near which, later, the Brettii built their city. A city of Oenotria, known as Cossa, appears in a fragment of Hecataeus of Miletus in the sixth century BC and later Julius Caesar in De Bello Civili, mentions a city called Cossa in the territory of Thourioi. The name of the creek Coseria, near Castiglione di Marshes, appears to be a further indication for the identification of the ancient city enotria Cossa. If the archaeological area of Castiglione di Marshes retains few traces of the ancient city of Cossa, the city Brettia there remain substantial remains, first and foremost those of the walls, built of blocks of sandstone willing to dry, a few steps inside leading the stands . On the eastern side the fortified town gate, a rectangular court, defended by two circular towers high two floors. Inside, a road linking the main gate to the so-called theater, a semicircular building backs onto a natural slope, which could accommodate about 200 people. More likelihood as it is a place for public meetings of datable to the fourth century BC Still inside the city walls and a cistern were found the remains of some houses, distinguishable in two stages to the construction technique. The discovery outside the door of a deposit of votive terracottas female type, testifies to the existence of a small place of worship, other ones; already active with the city of Cossa. Among the materials found in the excavation of the archaeological area of Castiglione di Marshes, we highlight important for a man's face in some local sandstone and clay models of temples, and the tiles siglete vereia 'that show the activity of a public institution MEP the production scale of bricks.
