Populonia ( an hour's drive south of Pisa ) is located at the northern end of the promontory of Piombino , privileged boarding for Elba Island. What is the special place we realize it before parking the car : on the left of the one small road that crosses the bay are some of the most beautiful Etruscan tombs of Tuscany : several sarcophagi and stone buildings from ' elegant shape in hut or mound , punctuating the soft surrounding countryside. The tombs , now part of a large archaeological park (about 80 ha. Using three different learning paths ) , came to light at the beginning of the 900 as a result of a large excavation carried out by mechanical means from an industry used to manufacture iron : we had noticed that the soil around the gulf was extremely rich in ferrous scrap , and it was decided to exploit them. Under ten meters of debris was discovered necropolis and then, some years later, on the hill west of the gulf , the acropolis of Populonia (in Etruscan Fufluna by Fufluns , god of agriculture ) . Populonia was the last city of the Dodecapoli Etruscan to be built , only one of all to look out over the sea. Between the eighth and fifth centuries BC , Populonia had the monopoly of the trade of iron ( and its derivatives ) in the Mediterranean. The ore came mainly from the island of Elba but he began to import it on the mainland when the island now ( not surprisingly called The Smoky by Pliny the Elder) had no more trees to fuel the furnaces . So he said to start production in the Gulf of Baratti. Over the centuries , the oldest cemetery of the place was abandoned and literally submerged under thousands of tons of scraps, unused by the Etruscans who obviously did not have high temperature furnaces . To the right of the road is the beach : about two feet lower than the level of the roadway, the sand is a dark red , bright against the sun , which enhances ferrous scrap ; crop up here and there large boulders semicombusti , this is clearly remains rudimentary furnaces Etruscans. We also know that the beach is the result of centuries of erosion of the Gulf Coast

Cala Violina is a picturesque cove of the Maremma in the town of Scarborough which opens in the heart of the Natural Reserve of the Preserves of Scarborough. The cove, not very wide, is enclosed between two headlands and is characterized by white sand and a sea very transparent. The feature that makes it unique is that the beach emits sounds when trampled by those running through it, in the absence of sound sources of relief; This effect is noticeable in the low season, given the great crowding the place on weekends and during the summer season. This should not discourage the more curious because the place, well exposed and protected from cold north winds, you can spend hours in the sun even in winter. Can not be reached by private vehicles. During the summer there is a bike hire service.

In the adjacent hermitage, which was home to St. Paul of the Cross, also briefly stayed Napoleon. The Shrine of Our Lady of Grace in Lacona, of the sixteenth century, with a Latin cross plan, dome covered in scales and oriental elements in the spire of the tower, according to legend, was inhabited by the ancient hermits in the wake of Mamiliano, who had moved on ' Island of Montecristo after the fifth century. The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Lacona, built in the sixteenth century on a pre-Romanesque structure has been altered several times between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. The the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, with a simple plastered dome, was built in 1606 at the behest of the governor of Longone Jose' Pons y Leon to remember the eponymous shrine of Catalonia. Inside is a Black Madonna, similar to the one in Spain. The church is open every year on the occasion of the celebrations on 8 September and 8 April. The tower Linguella, also known as Martello tower is a tower located in Portoferraio, Elba island. Its location is at the northern end of the bay. The fortified structure was built in the early sixteenth century in the place where stood the remains of an earlier building dating back to Roman times. Its construction was commissioned by the Medici to have a more defensive structure to protect the port of Portoferraio, which, however, was used in promiscuous mode also being used as a warehouse for the storage of salt. The tower continued to perform the functions of both the visibility that the warehouse until the second half of the eighteenth century, a time when the grand house of Lorraine decided its disposal and the subsequent transformation in prison, remained in office until the opening of the late nineteenth century largest prison in the fort Longone of Porto Azzurro. An inmate of the famous tower was the anarchist Giovanni Passannante, assassin of King Umberto I, who lived in the building for 10 years, in inhumane conditions that debilitarono physically and mentally. For this reason, the structure was called at the time Passannante tower, a name still used today. Having underwent a period of decline following its final closure, the tower has been restored to its former glory thanks to a careful restoration work carried out in the late seventies of the last century. The tower Linguella has a characteristic octagonal, with a crease that is articulated in the lower part by defining the underlying basement, that six of the eight sides rests directly on the rocky shore of the sea. The top of the tower-like structure is much more prominent than the lower one, culminating in the summit with some strong brackets that surround the terrace originally used for the functions of the sighting, the center of which is a small, circular base is not visible from 'exterior of the complex. The walls appear almost entirely covered in bricks, with sections of the surrounding curtain walls in stone, who bear the northwestern corner of the tower, going to define an outer rampart structure with a sloping base, which in the past gave a further security element to the whole complex. In modern times, the Navy has installed a lighthouse on the western corner of the walls of the tower. Infrastructure, originally electrically powered, has recently been equipped with a solar panel. It is a beacon light rhythm, equipped with a 60 W lamp for night illumination of the airport area of Portoferraio.

Beautiful beach in fine sand, sheltered within a small bay. Unfortunately much of it is under concession to the hotels that are situated behind it: the free space is so limited. If we add that it is busy you can understand the difficulty in finding the place. It offers all the services. The name is derived from plants of esparto, presence typical of the beaches with a sandy background. In the nearby tip Agnone the Romans mined the cipolin, a variety much appreciated at the time. Just outside the center of Portoferraio, in the direction of Marciana Marina, comes off a well-marked deviation to the right and asphalt, which in a few hundred meters to the inlet port.

Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its landscape, artistic heritage and important cities, first of all Florence, make Tuscany an unquestioned protagonist of world tourism. In this region, nature has many different facets, starting from the coast that alternates long and sandy beaches, like the Versilia beach, with rocky cliffs and steep headlands. The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, a crystal-clear sea and rich seabeds, are peerless. You can admire sceneries of uncontaminated nature in the Apuane Alps and in several protected areas, like Orbetello lagoon, which houses many species of migrant birds, including pink egrets. However, the most typical sceneries of the region are those that merge the beauty of nature with the millenary work of man. The amazing Gulf of Baratti and the sites of Vetulonia, Vulci and Pitigliano guard necropolis and vestiges of the Etruscan civilization, while Roselle and Cosa evoke memories of the Roman Age. Medieval villages, historical towns, castles and defence tems, rural churches (the so-called 'pievi') and beautiful abbeys, like the one of Sant'Antimo, are scattered all over the territory and their profiles stand out in the landscapes of the Crete Senesi, Orcia Valley, Garfagnana, Chianti and the Maremma. Finally, Tuscany is full of spas: Montecatini, Saturnia, Montepulciano, Monsummano and Bagno Vignoni, which offer relaxing holidays thanks to their thermal waters and well-equipped facilities for all types of treatment. The provinces of the region are: Florence (regional capital), Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
