Area Castrignano del Capo, Morciano di Leuca, Alessano
At the edge of Capo di Leuca is Patu , common place southeast of Lecce (which is 61 Km ) , on the back of a gently inclined slope tuff south west, 123 m. above sea level . The foundation of the small town dates back to 924 AD by refugees from the nearby Vereto , destroyed by the Saracens . The name , for some it derives from the greek pathos indicating the suffering of veretini , for centuries harassed by the Saracen raids ; for others from Verduro Pato , keeper of the granaries of the lords of Vereto . In 1318 they were the lords of the small town Sambiasi , which succeeded the Capece , the De Electis , the Episcopal Curia of Alessano, the Guarino and finally Granafei . The coat of arms depicts a cat who holds in his teeth a fish on a gold field . Despite its small size , Patu is a town steeped in history. There are many attractions that enchant anyone who decides to visit this small village in Apulia. First of all, the church of San Michele Arcangelo , the ancient parish church built in 1564 by architect Francis Centolanze of Nardo, by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and the Rosary. Other important religious building is the Church of St. John the Baptist dating from the tenth century , which stands in front of the Centropietre . The building recalls the bloody battle between Christians and Moors of 24 June 877.
Among the historic buildings also Roman Palace , residence belonging to the family of Liborio Romano (1793-1867) , the most illustrious son of Patu , the man considered the most discussed of the Italian Risorgimento . Salentino strongly attached to his land , Liborio Romano was a key figure in a historical period difficult, troubled , wonderful and glorious as was the unification of Italy. At the same time a citizen was sed in politics , the last Minister of the King of Naples , Francis II de Bourbon, at the service of the government. The building was built by Alessandro Romano ( father Liborio ) during the first decades of the nineteenth century. The structure, in neoclassical style , had the dual function of room for the large family and a symbol of power and wealth. The main facade, much higher than the rest of the building reinforces the impression of the grandeur of the same .
The history and nature characterize Morciano di Leuca, in which the town lies the fortified church of St. John the Almoner , dating from the sixteenth century and built on a pre-existing structure of the late Middle Ages. Worthy of a visit is the Marina di Torre Vado, with its landscape of cliffs and beaches and the majestic Aragonese tower overlooking the small harbor . The nature of the karst area in which Morciano is ed, favors the creation of sinkholes , which are generated by infiltration of surface water into the ground . This is the case of the two Vore of Barbarano ( Vora Vora Small and Large ), whose maximum depth is respectively 34 and 25 meters. Located on the outskirts of the village of Barbarano , the charming Little Lila is a magnificent historical monuments that covered the role of the last stage of the Via dei Pellegrini, before reaching the Santurio De Finibus Terrae .
The birth of the first settlement of Morciano di Leuca dates from the ninth century by refugees from the nearby city of Vereto , destroyed by the Saracens . With the advent of the Normans, the estate was donated in 1190 by Tancred at Sinibaldo Sambiasi , whose descendants owned it until the thirteenth century.
In the house passed to the Angevin period Riccardus Murchano who sold it in 1335 to Walter VI of Brienne . Between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries succeeded several families before the Sambiasi , then Capece , D' Enghien and Castromediano . Despite the abolition of the feudal tem had been enacted in 1806 , the house was bought in 1848 by Giuseppe Valentini . The name may derive most probably from the Latin word murex with reference to the kind of rocky and hilly nature of the ground on which the town is located . Other hypotheses suggest a derivation from the Latin name of person Murcius or the fact that in the past was a place for the storage of goods.

An ancient village of the fourteenth century , which still boasts of a rich historical and architectural heritage preserved in the shade of green oaks, pines and olive groves.
For a long time , and then Norman Byzantine rule , the urban structure of the town and its culture has been strongly influenced also by the successive rulers of the Swabians (1195-1266) , Anjou (1266-1435) , Aragon (1442-1502) , Spanish ( 1506-1734) and the Bourbons ( 1734-1861 ) .
The village still retains the original urban layout , with old houses positioned to court and narrow streets with a single access from the main road . Cannock , country of ancient Terra d' Otranto, Province of Lecce today , has a territory of 70% for the cultivation of olive trees , which produce an oil of excellent quality. It enjoys a lovely location with an endless horizon from the sea , which is split up into naked eye outside of the ' extended valley of olive trees. Its origins are uncertain, there are two hypotheses : according to the first , following the Arab invasion of Salento At 885, a Moor, captain of the Saracens, for strategic reasons he decided to deploy its troops in an area rich in reeds where stood the house of Canola ( Cannock ) . The second hypothesis takes the birth of the village around 1100 , at the time of the Norman William the Bad , who swooping in Terra d'Otranto , put to the sword many villages. Some families to escape the fury took refuge in the reeds where now stands the town. If there are few certainties about the origins , secure feedback we have on native vegetation, as evidenced by the representation of a cane on the coat of arms . An activity that has brought the name of Cannock around Italy and abroad, is the musical folklore . In this sense , a thank you goes to the Folk Group in 2000 that 25 years is testimony through his own songs ( as many as 200 texts ) of the return to the origins , traditions, issues of Salento.
Visit Alessano is like running a striking gallery , with sumptuous palaces with Renaissance facades , Baroque churches and court houses . A pleasant path winds through the palaces and Sangiovanni Legari , the churches of St. Anthony and the Capuchins and the ancient cave settlement of Macurano and then continues a short distance from the village , towards the Marina and downtown Novaglie Montesardo , ancient fortified village . A deep-rooted tradition attributes the foundation of the city of Alessano to Alexius I Comnenus , Byzantine Emperor , but there are no documents that allow you to certainly shed light on the origins of the city. They were certainly the Normans Alessano to assign a prominent role throughout the Capo di Leuca that will keep for a long time . It is at this time that, in all likelihood , the city became a bishopric remained so until 1818. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries Alessano lived his peak season . Under the lordship of important noble families ( Della Ratta , Del Balzo , the De Capua and finally Gonzaga ) , the city became an important trading center , attracting wealthy families also Venetian traders and a small Jewish community (which had a synagogue in via della Giudecca) . The urban fabric is arrichi' of valuable buildings in Renaissance style that you can still admire and around the ducal court , flourished a remarkable literary movement . Subsequently the center declined , until gradually lose the position of pre-eminence . The old village of Montesardo with its characteristic position of natural fortress , has origins that are lost in the mists of time. Have recently been discovered traces of important era structures messapica ( remains of the walls of the fourth century BC , tombs, foundations of buildings ) showing that already at that time, this was a settlement of considerable size. On documents from the Roman era Mons arduus , meaning Steep Mountain , is marked on the route of the Via Traiana. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of important schools of mathematics and music . After the fall of the empire was always used as a fortress , with its massive ramparts and a solid circle of walls with towers , in which he opened four ports : port the Earth , brings Nova, Castle door and I closed the door , which however, were torn down in 1867. Nature is again the protagonist in the Murgia National Park and the Gargano National Park with its wild Umbrian forest, its salt pans and lakes, the deep ravines of Laterza and the wide dolines of Altamura, which distinguish the hinterland of the region with their charming sceneries.
