Cross between bitter orange and tangerine, clementines come perhaps from Algeria (according to one of the most credible hypothesis, their name would attract to the Father Cle'ment Rodier in Misserghin, in whose garden were found). Grown in Italy since the '30s, they found one of their ideal habitat in Calabria. The main areas of production are concentrated in lowland areas existing in the region and they are: the Plain of Sybaris and Corigliano in Cosenza, Catanzaro in the plain of Lamezia, the Plain of Gioia Tauro-Rosario and Locri in Reggio. In just 58 municipalities of Calabria is concentrated almost half the area agrumetata regional, divided as follows: Province of Reggio Calabria 20 municipalities; Province of Catanzaro 14 municipalities; Province of Cosenza 16 municipalities; Province of Vibo 5 municipalities; Province of Crotone 3 municipalities. The village of Miglierina is not far from the highway 280 connecting the two seas Catanzaro Lamezia Terme, at the narrowest point of Calabria. Its small territory of just 13 square kilometers , rises in altitude up to 1,013 m of Monte Portella starting from 250 m of the river Amato . The first historical are uncertain and shrouded in popular legend , but it is assumed that the first settlement was built in the village Cusati , consisting of farmers from Scigliano and the Valley of the Savuto . The resort Cusati - place of foundation - soon proved unsuitable , so we found it necessary to shift the focus to the highest hillock , pleasant and flat, full of the best sand to build. From best rina in Miglierina is a short step , and it is in this step that you can find the etymological explanation of the name of the country . Miglierina fits in the saddle Marcellinara , a narrow gorge between two seas, the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Sea, and is bordered by the towns of Amato, Marcellinara , Tirindrish . This geographical location enables , with a single glance , to embrace the panoramic view of the Gulf of Squillace, of St. Euphemia , and when the mist allows it, to spot the Aeolian islands with the unique crater of Stromboli . The territory miglierinese is enclosed by that of neighboring municipalities and it is curious to find that always the border with neighboring Amato, is marked by a bridge of ancient workmanship built on a spring, and then channeled into the Funtanella . Near the river Amato are the remains of the ancient water mills , which some studies bring back the origins of the name of the country Muglierina ( land of the mills ) , showing a German root of the name ( in German miller says muller ) . That mill is just one of the possible interpretations of the origin of the name of the country . In fact there are other versions , but they all start from the idea that the first appropriations were you located in the lower part , near the river, precisely at the location Cusati . This term, for some greek - Albanian origin , would indicate a localization of the Albanian population , as distinct from the original inhabitants. At the location Melina of the population would find fertile ground for processing and to build their homes , hence, the term best rina , referring perhaps to the different nature of the soil compared to that of neighboring Amato, composed mainly of clay. Others believe , however, that Miglierina resulting from the existence in the area, a great milestone, Milia post to mark the distance along the road that went from Ponte Corace Charon or milium that the sole of a mile.

C. and destroyed by Hannibal at the end of the Second Punic War , the city was for the Krotonese the perfect opportunity to open an outlet in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The oldest information about the city are linked to the myth of the mermaid Ligea , which appears on coins minted by Terina and believed to be the true masterpieces of the issue. On the flip side of this coin depicts a winged maiden while a vase filled with water ( the hydria ) to a spring that flows from a lion's head , a symbol in ancient iconography of a sacred spring . ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS Key to the identification of the territory of Terina with that of Lamezia Terme is a bronze sheet entered the second half of the fourth century BC recovered by Paolo Orsi in 1914. The most significant finding from the site of S. Eufemia Vetere is the so-called Treasury of St. Euphemia kept in the British Museum in London . Another important finding is the red-figure hydria of Cerzeto . The vase depicts a lady sitting terinea and intent to mirror while her maids help her dress up and hold out the jewelry. Close to the archaeological site it is possible to visit the ruins of the Benedictine Abbey , built by Robert Guiscard in 1062 and destroyed by the earthquake of 1638. The Abbey was rebuilt a few kilometers away, precisely on the hill where stands the farming village of St. Euphemia Vetere .

The area gegografica production of Figs of Cosenza is bounded, in a portion equal to about a third of the Province of Cosenza. This name designates only the dried fruit fig domestic Ficus carica sativa, belonging to the variety Dottato (or Optatus). Their skin is initially straw green, then turns yellow greenish. The pulp is amber, moderately firm and slightly aromatic. The juice is not very dense, however, when ripe, sometimes escapes dall'ostiolo, to . The flavor of the fruit is sweet and honeyed. The element that most distinguishes Figs of Cosenza 'from figs of the same variety Dottato grown outside the Cosenza area is made up of the achenes small, subtle, almost imperceptible during chewing. Probably introduced at the time of Ancient Greece, the cultivation of the fig tree is documented in the province of Cosenza since '500 (v. Descrittione throughout Italy Leandro Alberti). More detailed information on its production, drying and marketing are found in some economic reports and notes written in 700 and 800. Especially interesting in this regard is the Statistics murattiana of 1812, from which we learn how the Figs of Cosenza were even then being exported outside the Kingdom. At the beginning of the last century some companies are beginning to emerge from the scope of production and family to face the market more effectively. Starting from loose figs dried in the sun, farmers in Cosenza have invented over the centuries a large amount of derivatives, more or less elaborate and artistic. The human factor is decisive is the quality of dried figs, and other types of products derived from them (Montagnoli, spreaders, nocchette, figs stuffed, baked figs, balls, braids, Corollas, salami figs, honeyed figs) all loads a symbolism that embraces social and religious meanings.

A relaxed human settlement of the IV BC almost certainly related to a city Brettia, was investigated on the hill bordered by streams and Coseria Scarmaci, in the archaeological area of Castiglione di Marshes. On the plateau in front of the village, had been excavated 50 burials of the IX BC accompanied by guns, spears, iron and bronze, brooches, decorated plates and other items. The area of Castiglione di Marshes could hide the ancient city enotra Cossa, near which, later, the Brettii built their city. A city of Oenotria, known as Cossa, appears in a fragment of Hecataeus of Miletus in the sixth century BC and later Julius Caesar in De Bello Civili, mentions a city called Cossa in the territory of Thourioi. The name of the creek Coseria, near Castiglione di Marshes, appears to be a further indication for the identification of the ancient city enotria Cossa. If the archaeological area of Castiglione di Marshes retains few traces of the ancient city of Cossa, the city Brettia there remain substantial remains, first and foremost those of the walls, built of blocks of sandstone willing to dry, a few steps inside leading the stands . On the eastern side the fortified town gate, a rectangular court, defended by two circular towers high two floors. Inside, a road linking the main gate to the so-called theater, a semicircular building backs onto a natural slope, which could accommodate about 200 people. More likelihood as it is a place for public meetings of datable to the fourth century BC Still inside the city walls and a cistern were found the remains of some houses, distinguishable in two stages to the construction technique. The discovery outside the door of a deposit of votive terracottas female type, testifies to the existence of a small place of worship, other ones; already active with the city of Cossa. Among the materials found in the excavation of the archaeological area of Castiglione di Marshes, we highlight important for a man's face in some local sandstone and clay models of temples, and the tiles siglete vereia 'that show the activity of a public institution MEP the production scale of bricks.

The origin of the Calabrian salami tradition probably dates back to the Greek colonization of the Ionian coast and to the glories of Ancient Greece. Historical records describe processing of pork since the seventeenth century. In that time you place the first written reference, ed in a work entitled Della Calabria Illustrated, where mention is made of a wide use of the technical specification for processing pork. In more recent times the production of sausages in Calabria is confirmed by statistics, published following the censuses of the time of Joachim Murat, dating back to the early nineteenth century. In those documents it also highlights the use of spices and flavorings derived from local plants to give more flavor to the meat. The particular taste and intense is enhanced by the combination with red wines of the local tradition, a high alcohol content. The sausage, which becomes part of tasty recipes of Southern cuisine, can be enjoyed on its own, served as an appetizer along with other meats and cheeses, combined with sourdough bread.
