From Forli', the routes of the pilgrims crossed through the Apennines along several roads among which one that crossed through the Bidente (or Ronco) Valley, and that passed by the nearby Forlimpopoli. Forlimpopoli - Servi Church - Foto by Matteo BondiThe town is located in the plains along the pathway of the via Emilia and it also boasts of Roman origins. It was founded by the Roman Consol Popilio Lenate in 132 BC with the name of Forum Popili (Popilio's Forum), from which it got its present name. The most imposing historic building of Forlimpopoli is most definitely the medieval fortress, in the center of Piazza Garibaldi. Built at the end of the 1300s, on the ruins of the ancient cathedral of S. Maria Popiliense, the fortress still has its massive forms built in the following century. Excavation finds and elements of the cathedral that disappeared are on display in the Archeological Civic Museum set up inside the fortress. An example of the architecture from the 6th century is the S. Ruffillo Collegiate Church, which houses the relics of the Saint, the first bishop of Forlimpopoli. It was redone during the 1400s and restored in 1821. From the town, one went out along a Roman route quite well documented in medieval sources, which hit upon the towns of Meldola, Cusercoli, Galeata, and Santa Sofia one after the other, and then joined up with that of the Savio Valley in Bagno di Romagna, a hot springs location already well known in antiquity.

In front of the fortress stands the Pavaglione, imposing eighteenth-century portico once home to the market in cocoons of the silkworm. Today it houses the market on Wednesday, with its six hundred years of history and numerous spectacular events. Next to the fortress stands the Monument to Francesco Baracca (1936), Italian flying ace during the First World War, in which the town has dedicated the eponymous museum. Sometimes watery eyes and a breath pungent invades our nostrils, then the palate tastes an 'authentic delicacy, very aromatic, capable of giving the food a flavor that enhances the taste and reward. And 'the Allium (Celtic word for burning) Ascalonicum or shallots, a small bulb of the lily family Violet white wrapped in an outer film of a different color from copper to reddish and not a garlic, nor an onion. Shallots always cultivated in Romagna, was brought by people coming from 'East who migrated to Europe' five thousand years ago. Since 1992, the PRO LOCO Riolo Terme organizes the fair of the Romagna shallot with the 'idea of promoting a product typical of the family tradition with the local' then obtaining in 1997 of 'IGP (protected geographical indication) at the European Community. This market is held in the central streets of the country by late Thursday afternoon and evening, on Sundays all day. At the food stand the Pro Loco offers a menu strictly based Romagna shallot. Allium Ascalonicum. The Romagna shallot belongs to the lily family (Allium) such as garlic, onion, aloe. L 'ancient name of these plants, whose cultivation has been known for at least 3,000 years. C. already in use by the Roman people, not easily rebuilt-ble. It is believed that the shallot has been brought by the people who migrated from the Middle East to Europe, including the Celts, very present an-that in our area, in fact the term allium is a Celtic word meaning burning. There are many plants belonging to the lily family, all-Zate characterized by a pungent flavor and a typical smell. In particular, our Allium Ascalonicum, vernacular scallions, shallots, garlic, shallot, is a bulbous plant, has some small bulbs aggregates between them to form piriformis that arise in large numbers around a central bulb, are more or less compressed at the sides where touch with the bulbs closer. They are wrapped in a film, which changes color from copper to reddish or brown to grayish. The cloves, deprived of external film, can reach a weight ranging from 5 to 25 grams depending on the type of land on which it is grown, they also take on a typical color, a purplish green, a reddish, light pink, a marked white and purple. In particular, our Romagna shallot presents an initial analysis outside a well developed root tem, the roots can reach discrete lengths, also 25-30 cm. the leaves arise from each bulb, and have a cylindrical shape. The Romagna shallot tastes his particular, stronger and fragrant than the onion and sweeter than garlic. A particularly interesting and curious is this: the shallot of Romagna has never been found in the wild for a singular reason, does not flower for which there is no possibility of exchange of pollen between inflorescences of most plants, so it is essential to preserve a part of the bulbs of the 'year to plant to obtain a new production. This poses a problem for cultivation can not follow suit because there you have to keep the bulb, but it has a limited period of storage, so hypothetically if no replant the bulb of the 'year of the typical shallot Romagna disappears. Another particularly interesting for researchers, in the years when discussing genetics, our shallots not doing flower pollen does not exchange that does not exchange genes, and still retains its genetic as when it was brought to Europe, a kit 5000 years.

La Grotta del Farneto, hidden in the heart of the Parco dei Gessi and Gullies dell'Ababdessa with access from the Visitor Centre Casa Fantini in places Farneto, was discovered in 1871 by Francesco Orsoni, who started the first important archaeological research. The cave is famous for some graves dating back to the Copper Age discovered by the great caver Bolognese Luigi Fantini in the 60s in a natural shelter created by a layer protruding and now preserved at the Museum of Prehistory Luigi Donini San Lazzaro , the Archaeological Museum of Bologna and the Archaeological Museum of paleoenvironmental Budrio. As a result of quarrying, the entire outcrop and cave remained inaccessible for years because of a landslide that blocked the entrance, to the realization of a recovery and safety that has finally allowed the redevelopment and reopened to the public in 2008. Today the cave is visited by guided tours whose calendar is available by consulting the page Guided tours. On the occasion of the reopening of the cave in 2008, was presented the publication La Grotta del Farneto: a story of people and nature curated by Annalisa Paltrinieri, journalist for years collaborator of the Park for the communications sector, which, in addition to documenting the 'recovery intervention and securing the entire area, tells the story of the place through affective contributions, testimonies and memories.

The old Faventia, already a Roman municipality, is developed in the late Republican era along the route of the Via Emilia, near the Lamone River. The city, known worldwide for its production of ceramic art, throughout the Middle Ages was the capital of a territorium civil and ecclesiastical from the mountains on the border with Tuscany extended to the valleys to the north of Lugo and Bagnacavallo. The territory was divided into nearly thirty pievati. The urban structure of the old town essentially corresponds to the Roman tem, although in some cases later interventions have disrupted the regular grid primitive. From here you already branched at the time two roads, one of which - a Roman Cardo - led to Bagnacavallo and the other in Ravenna, also reachable by water. The city, Episcopalian, became a municipality in the twelfth century and later, in the fourteenth century, a lordship ruled by Manfredi. In the urban structure emerge a few vestiges of cultural construction in the Middle Ages that dominated the center of the city. The Basilica of Santa Maria foris Portam, or Santa Maria Vecchia, considered by many erroneously the primitive cathedral of the city, is the oldest religious building in Faenza which we have news. The bell tower, probably built in the tenth or eleventh century, is, by its octagonal shape, unique that is unparalleled in the region and that has led to the hypothesis that the structure insists on the walls of a former baptistery. The crypt of the church of Saints Ippolito and Lorenzo is what survives of a medieval church, of which ignores the safe history, replaced by a new building between 1771 and 1774. The church of Santa Maria Maddalena of the Commandery, with the adjoining Hospice of the Holy Sepulchre, was probably founded in the early twelfth century. Of this primitive complex, originally a Commandery of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, and of the Knights of Malta, few traces remain.
