Home environments are almost completely collapsed , while he retains the small church, with columns and capitals carved into the tuff , consisting of two quadrangular rooms , with a domed roof that entrance to cruise to the bottom , with an apse remains of a fresco depicting two saints with the miter ( headdress worn by bishops as a sign of authority) , perhaps S. Columbanus and S. Savino . The room door was decorated with a large cycle of frescoes of the thirteenth century , including the figures of the twelve apostles of the Redeemer. Some slabs of tufa of these precious frescoes were stolen in the sixties of the twentieth century , and fortunately recovered, are now preserved at the Museum of Ischia di Castro . More complex is the floor plan of the hermitage of Ripatonna Cicognina dug on three different levels and attended the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, at the time of the first plant seem to relate the frescoes of the Sienese school that decorate the church , representing St. Anthony Abbot and a holy bishop .

Since ancient Etruscans inhabited the green Tuscany, scatters precious traces of their civilization , but some centers today were born only during the Fascist era , with the reclamation of wetlands and the upgrading of the Tyrrhenian coast. This is the case of Albinia , Orbetello small fraction of 3000 inhabitants in the province of Grosseto at the time of his birth was a simple rural hamlet comprising a handful of houses, a church center , a railway station and a grain silo, wanted by the Fascist regime in a degraded area before . The first name of the town was Albenga , but since it was too often confused with that of the nearby river, was soon changed to Albinia . A name that today is no longer think of agriculture and reclaimed lands , but in a popular seaside resort , one of the most famous and appreciated in this part of Tuscany . The greater development of the town dates back to the fifties of the twentieth century, when the center was born of peripheral Colonization Ente Maremma and became the center engine of the Land Reform . The surrounding countryside was transformed into a building site, were born the rural villages of Dusty and Marseilles , were built the houses, were extended lines of communication , and in 1957 was consecrated the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie , which is still visible in the center of possession. Visitors to Albinia today are enchanted above the Tyrrhenian Sea , clear and persuasive in calmer days , impetuous and sublime when arguing with the wind and slaps the rocks on the coast. Along the coast there are wide beaches of white sand , comfortable for families, children and lovers of pure relaxation, but also the taste wild coves , ideal for those who prefer unspoilt scenery . To enchant visitors there is the special music of the Mediterranean , with the whisper of the waves, the chirping of cicadas and the cries of the seagulls. The climate is typical of the Mediterranean area , summers are hot and sunny but pleasant , refreshed by a gentle breeze that blows constantly from the sea, and winters are mild and pleasant , never too cold. Suffice it to say that in the coldest month , January , average temperatures range from a minimum of 2 C to a maximum of 9 C, while in July and August , ranging from 17 C to 30 C. Rainfall is scarce in summer and focus especially in the fall, between October and December , with an average of 9 rain days per month. But the landscape around Albinia includes not only beaches and clear blue sea : the north end of the lagoon to the west there is the so-called ' Stagnetto Albinia ,' a natural environment that welcomes winter in many species of ducks, as shoveler and mallards, and some elegant marsh harrier , and year-round home to flamingos , spoonbills and glossy ibis . The salty wind that blows in these areas makes the reed dance in the air, and gives a unique magic to the coastal landscape .

Montalcino is located in the heart of southern Tuscany . In the Middle Ages the territory of Montalcino was divided among four ecclesiastical districts : Arezzo, Chiusi , Grosseto and Siena. This subdivision was consistent with that of antiquity , in fact here we met the territories of the major important Etruscan cities of Arezzo , Chiusi , Roselle (Grosseto), and perhaps also of Volterra. Many of the findings of this era are still preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Montalcino. The medieval history of the area has many obscure points , as all documentation relating destroyed was preserved in the archives of the Abbey of St. Antimo , which depended on the castle itself . Also the fact that the Via Francigena passed to the east of the village, at today's weigh Torrenieri not helped us find historical antecedents to the second half of 1100. The news depart from the end of the twelfth century, with Montalcino already autonomous municipality of Siena ally during the war, lost against Florence in 1176. Montalcino soon found himself having to fight the expansionist ambitions of Siena and the alliance was broken, even in 1200 the castle was destroyed by the Sienese , momentarily truce with the Florentine , also pledged to eliminate the obstacle of similar Semifonte. The resumption of the war with Florence to Siena prevented him from completing the conquest of Montalcino. The castle , however, remained under the protection of the Church and the City of Siena . After a failed attempt to win back their independence, in 1232 , the castle was reoccupied and forced into a new alliance with Siena. After yet another revolt , the castle was again conquered by the Sienese in 1252 but lost soon after thanks to the intervention of Florence and Grosseto. A Montaperti the Montalcino had sided with Florence against Siena and the victory of the latter did nothing but take them to a new loss of autonomy. In 1269 he was again defeated Siena , Colle , Montalcino and free again. Only after the mid-fourteenth century Montalcino came under the control of Siena. From this period the construction of the fortress with a view to control the city center . Siena and Montalcino was now in the fifteenth century it became one of the most important centers of the territory of the Republic. In the following century the city and the castle withstood the siege Imperial Army and the Medici in 1553 during the war that led to the final capitulation of Siena in 1555. After the surrender reached Montalcino where many citizens of Siena , led by Piero Strozzi , revived in exile of the Republic. The city became the capital of the territories conquered by the Florentines and not yet resisted until 1559 when, now isolated from the fall of Telamon and Castiglione , was offered the yield and sworn allegiance to Cosimo de ' Medici. The castle is still virtually intact. As said its construction began in 1361 on the southern summit of preesitenti city walls in 1200, incorporating the tower of St. Martin , St. John the tower .

Centre for summer and winter holidays, the most important and best equipped of the area of Mount Amiata. Dell'Abbazia S. Savior, who for about a millennium had to radiate its power throughout the eastern Amiata area, only the church and the crypt. From history and legend, we learn that this monastery, Benedictine and Cistercian first, was born around 750 at the behest of the Lombard king Rachis, who used it initially to control the Via Francigena, which ran along the valley immediately below. Subsequently, the temporal power of this abbey, although very often clashing with Aldobrandeschis, the powerful nobles whose territories included the entire western side of Amiata, is great evidence in the history of Tuscany and in the relations between the Papacy and the Emperors. In this context, the historic environment, has a significant interest in the medieval town, which is preserved almost intact with narrow picturesque streets. Abbey S. Salvatore has experienced in the last two centuries the positive aspects (which were derived for the induced loss) and with negative (for the working conditions of the miners) an important mining development linked to the production of mercury, whose mines are all closed today . What's Near Abbey Chapel dell'Ermeta, cicondata by dense bush. Mine Abbey, whose story is now the subject of this mining museum, went over about a century after the pioneering phase of the research phases of large productive use (30s-40), to that of the gradual downsizing , due to the abandonment of mercury in various industrial applications in which that metal was used. Surrounded and placed in the classic Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio Tuscia two steps, Amiata has been for millennia a territory with its own autonomous prerogatives geological, historic and scenic. The lush beech forests, rocks with unusual shapes, rich and fresh springs, mines (now relegated to the museum) and a stunted mountain agriculture have given to those who live on the slopes of the mountain the proud consciousness of diversity. The cycles of history and art have variously concerned and lapped over the centuries, the Amiata. But neither the Etruscans nor Romans, nor the Lombards nor the emperors of the West, nor the historical republics of Siena and Florence, nor the bustling modernity of nearby Grosseto, have never been able to alter the spirit, the character, the magic Amiata mountain, which made the symbiotic relationship between nature, landscape and man-made. A large village, It may be a small out of the way place but it has two excellent restaurants and there is a gelateria where one can lick a delicious ice cream while watching the evening passeggiata. Or you can take it with you and visit the ancient Etruscan gateway to the town. Saturnia was in ancient times a large town of considerable importance. The porta is easily identifiable as Etruscan owing to its jigsaw pattern of irregular and vast stones so finely cut they have held together without mortar for well over two thousand years. Through this arch passed the 'new' Roman road, the Via Clodia which went from here to Rome: The basalt paving stones bear the grooves of the iron tyres of Roman and mediaeval vehicles. Devastated by malaria, Saturnia was almost abandoned until recently when the nearby spa began to revive its fortunes. Saturnia itself is a charming medieval village and the surrounding, unspoiled hills are filled with olive groves and woodlands and rich with Etruscan remains. It is about an hour and a half from Rome, an hour from Siena, and a half-hour to the sea. The area has at present gained a reputation for the high standard of its restaurants and trattorie. At the foot of the hill lies a hot (37C) water spa famous for its therapeutic qualities. Just outside from the medieval town walls the countryside spreads out: here you can take easy wonderfool walks through the perfumed Mediterranean bushes along the Albegna river. Longer walks might take you to Sovana, Sorano, Pitigliano. You may see the sea the distance, framed by the natural park of Mounts of the Uccellina and Monte Argentario. From Porto S.Stefano a daily ferry connects to Giglio and Giannutri islands; not far away are the seaside resorts of Ansedonia and Porto Ercole. In most towns where there are natural hot springs, there is a modern spa where they bring the hot springs water into a swimming pool and you pay to use the pool. Some of these spas are outdoors and only open in summer; others are more medical type spas that are indoors and open all year. This is a waterfall with a difference - the water is hot, the temperature of a nice hot bath. It smells good and sulphurous but then you can see why the Romans believed the waters came from Hades.

Of tufa towns in central Italy there if they are different. The nearby Sorano and Sovana, for example, or remaining within fifty miles, Orvieto and, a little further south, Orte. But Pitigliano is different ... and, despite not having the Momumento breathtaking that remains engraved in my mind, it's all the context that is almost magical enchanted. The origin of Pitigliano affected by this spell and is lost in the mists of time. Legend has it that it was founded by two young Petilio and Celiano. Petilio was the gens Petilia, an important Etruscan Roman family, while Celiano appartiena the Etruscan family of Celes Vibenna. Petilio Celiano and found nothing better than to steal the golden crown from the temple of Jupiter Stator in Rome and bring it right on the cliff of Pitigliano where, fascinated by the beauty of the place, we stayed and founded the city. We do not believe much in this legend Etruscan - Roman ... just because the origin of Pitigliano is certainly the oldest and perhaps before the Etruscan civilization itself. Today in Pitigliano is to stroll through the narrow streets, with many small craft shops, immersed in the colors of the tufa and the smell of wood-burning fireplaces ... and assure you that it is an endless pleasure, even if confined to only the historical center ... one above the tuff cliff. Beyond the walls, in the east, it is naturally extended Pitigliano new very modern, but without the charm of centuries. But what is the best time to visit Pitigliano. Surely from spring to fall, even though many of the pictures that we publish are done in the middle of winter. In particular we indicate the Torciata of St. Joseph, which takes place March 19

It seems that the sky is upside down at the bottom, soft in the countryside of Tuscany, and the rustic houses of a village are gathered around it, curious to see this strip of blue down to earth . They are the homes of Bagno Vignoni , gathered around a pool of water that acts as a mirror to the sky , with its changing lights , let the clouds and constellations . We are one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany could be in a picture , but it's in the heart of Val d'Orcia , including in the town of San Quirico d' Orcia , in the province of Siena. For enhancing the beauty of the surrounding landscape is , that as a garland weaves lush rows of vines , rows of silvery olive groves , sunflower fields and pastures green fragrant. But the most precious treasure guarded by Bagno Vignoni are the baths , which give the town a very special aspect : the hot springs , known since Roman times , flowing from the volcanic soil and emerge in a large tub in the open. Around it, a mirror vain , gathered houses, inns and shops in the country. As a square, but made of water , the spa tub is the centerpiece of the town, and around the place the most important moments of village life. Because the thermal activity of the place became famous it was not until the Middle Ages , though the first evidence in this regard are the oldest . Gradually , over time , many historical figures have spent time in Bagno Vignoni , such as Catherine of Siena, Pope Pius II Piccolomini and Lorenzo the Maginifico . The authorities and institutions from time to time have dominated the territory they occupied the spa with care and love, and we can still benefit from cozy and comfortable facilities . Compared to the original spa , today it is not possible to swim directly into the Square of sources , but the modern facilities are just outside the center : Here you find the swimming pools fed by the same water, and you have the chance to make mud , inhalations and irrigations . The hyperthermal waters , with a temperature of 52 C, are sulfate - bicarbonate- alkaline-earthy . Although the baths of today constitute the main tourist attraction of the country, the most characteristic of Bagno Vignoni is the old town, with an old bathtub , the stone-built houses , and a fascinating maze of little streets cobbled streets. Next to the water , bright pearl in the center , stands the church of San Giovanni Battista , a beautiful sacred to nave, with a facade simple and straightforward. Inside you can admire some works of art , including a painting of the Sienese school of St. Catherine of Siena, Bagno Vignoni with the background , built in the eighteenth century. Outside, however, on the front porch , there is a small chapel dedicated to the same saint , built in 1660 and containing in origin, a fresco of the risen Christ , now moved to the church of San Giovanni Battista.

Cala di Forno is one of the most beautiful beaches of Tuscany (4 sails LegAmbiente), and if there are few who know it, because summer is unreachable, off-limits, verboten, forbidden, no way. Not only is forbidden, but it is also nestled between two headlands, within the Natural Park of Maremma (also known as the Park dell'Uccellina), and between Talamone Principana at Sea, in the province of Grosseto. So far, the beach was still closed to the public from 15 May to 15 September, in practice, precluded lovers of the sea and sunbathing, and known only to the most curious among the trekkers, able to get 13 miles of track from the Albarese to the beach, and certainly not for bathing. Around this beach, there has been a long hard struggle, between the proponents, pure and hard, preservation of the environment, and who wants to make accessible the area, including tourism. No need to worry because, at least for now, there will be an invasion of the field, since the compromise reached to open the beach in summer, is one of a limited number; no more than 50 people per day. In short, they will not be a beach for everyone, partly because the Cala del Forno Expirience has a cost: 50 Euro per person for the privilege of getting to sea, with shuttle service (only an hour's hike, compared to 4 to put into account normally), guide and final toast included.

A promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and reaches out to Giannutri and Giglio. Not an island , connected to Tuscany by two strips of land , which encapsulate the beauty of the Lagoon of Orbetello. All this is Monte Argentario , a territory that combines the charm of the mountain to the sea and clear water coves alternating with large terraces planted with vines. The promontory , which reaches the highest point at Punta Telegraph ( 635 meters), is characterized by high and rocky coasts and is covered by a thick Mediterranean vegetation interspersed by olive groves and vineyards. The major center of Monte Argentario is Porto Santo Stefano. The town descends along the slopes of the headland in a picturesque bay on the north coast and is the ideal destination for those who love the sea. Around the country meet beautiful villas and ancient watchtowers that populate the sides of the bay, while the coast , steep and full of ravines, is punctuated by the green of the Mediterranean . Thanks to its two harbors, Porto Nuovo and Porto Vecchio, the town maintains a busy commercial and tourist activity -based navigation retriever and the links to the Iles of Giglio and Giannutri. A reminder of the seafaring traditions of a fishing boat and escaped the assault of the Saracens, on the 15th of August is held the Palio seafaring , an event preceded by a spectacular procession in Spanish costumes . On the opposite side instead of Monte Argentario is Porto Ercole , a charming seaside village nestled in a sheltered bay on a small promontory . Its ancient origins can be traced back to the Etruscans and the Phoenicians , while it owes its name to the Romans, who called it Portus Herculius , in honor of the legendary Hercules. The Spaniards fortified with the construction of Forte Stella and Forte Filippo, who , with their grandeur , dominate and make it even more fascinating landscape . Along the small harbor lined with shops , trendy bars and lively nightclubs during the summer evenings . Very close by is Cala Galera, a picturesque natural bay on which it arose the new port .

TOSCANA

Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its landscape, artistic heritage and important cities, first of all Florence, make Tuscany an unquestioned protagonist of world tourism. In this region, nature has many different facets, starting from the coast that alternates long and sandy beaches, like the Versilia beach, with rocky cliffs and steep headlands. The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, a crystal-clear sea and rich seabeds, are peerless. You can admire sceneries of uncontaminated nature in the Apuane Alps and in several protected areas, like Orbetello lagoon, which houses many species of migrant birds, including pink egrets. However, the most typical sceneries of the region are those that merge the beauty of nature with the millenary work of man. The amazing Gulf of Baratti and the sites of Vetulonia, Vulci and Pitigliano guard necropolis and vestiges of the Etruscan civilization, while Roselle and Cosa evoke memories of the Roman Age. Medieval villages, historical towns, castles and defence tems, rural churches (the so-called 'pievi') and beautiful abbeys, like the one of Sant'Antimo, are scattered all over the territory and their profiles stand out in the landscapes of the Crete Senesi, Orcia Valley, Garfagnana, Chianti and the Maremma. Finally, Tuscany is full of spas: Montecatini, Saturnia, Montepulciano, Monsummano and Bagno Vignoni, which offer relaxing holidays thanks to their thermal waters and well-equipped facilities for all types of treatment. The provinces of the region are: Florence (regional capital), Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
