Sorano is an Italian town of 3502 inhabitants in the province of Grosseto. Sorano is defined Matera of Tuscany, for its particular characteristic of many urban buildings carved into the tufa rock, reminiscent of the famous Sassi. The municipality of Sorano stretches in the eastern part of the Tufa. Bordered to the north by the municipality of Castell'Azzara, east with the municipalities of Acquapendente Lazio, Proceno, Onano and Latera, on the south by the town of Pitigliano, on the west by the towns of Manchester and Semproniano. The capital city is located 379 meters s.l.m. on a tuff that, from the east, overlooking a stretch of the river Lens; is at the center of an area that develops primarily on a straight hill, albeit interspersed with hollows and reliefs. The lower altitude is recorded in Pianetto Sovana, at the town of the same name, with shares of around 270 meters, while the higher elevations, mountain type, are recorded on the peak overlooking the village of Montevitozzo (926 meters above sea level) and Monte Elmo (829 meters above sea level), two findings that break cleanly the hilly landscape. The main rivers are the Fiora, which borders the west municipal flowing from north to south, and the river Lens, its left tributary, which sources in the town of Sorano. The smaller rivers, including the Stridolone, have more torrential character. A series of hot springs, known as the Baths of Sorano, flow along a creek that runs about 3-4 km south of the center. Sorano began as an ancient possession of the family Aldobrandeschi, but the municipal area was already inhabited since the Etruscan period, as the remarkable discoveries of ancient settlements and cemeteries. After the marriage of Anastasia, the last heir of the Aldobrandeschi, and Romano Orsini in 1293, control of Sorano passed to the family Orsini. The center followed the historical and political vicissitudes of nearby Pitigliano, where was located the residence of the counts, and the Orsini pledged to strengthen it by providing it with effective fortifications, which made Sorano a safe haven from enemy attack more often in fact, during the fifteenth century, the Sienese laid the Sorano fortress under siege, but never able to occupy it. At the end of the sixteenth century, with the fall of the county of the Orsini, Sorano passed to the Medici, who inglobarono in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany at the beginning of the next century, together with nearby Pitigliano.

Numerous archeological finds dating back to the Etruscan period that were brought to light in the areas of the Scansano and Albegna valleys, demonstrate that vine growing was an important element in the local Etruscan community. Earthenware jars containing Vitis vinifera seeds dating back to the fifth century BC and bronze statuettes of offerers holding sickle, the standard tools of vintners until almost the present day, are just some of the artifacts found in the rural area of the Usi, which includes the towns of Scansano and Semproniano, and the site of Ghiaccioforte, an area between Scansano and Saturnia. With the decline of the Roman Empire, Scansano, as well as the rest of the Maremma region, inevitably experienced a period of crisis and deterioration due to the loss of the population, which led to hydrogeological instability and the swamping of the coastal areas. Although wine production survived around the inhabited centers of earlier Etruscan settlements, the extensive production of the Roman settlements failed. The establishment of the so-called 'estatura' or summer migration at the time of Peter Leopold I of Lorraine (circa 1737), to escape the malaria infestation present along the coastal areas due to their enlarged swampland, and the arrival in Scansano of several wealthy families, summoned by the Grand Duke to invest in and enhance the area, brought new possibilities for the development of the Maremma region and especially for Scansano. The Morellino di Scansano wine originates in one of the most natural and uncontaminated areas of Tuscany: the southern coastal area of the region known as the Tuscan Maremma, located between the valleys of the Ombrone and Albegna Rivers, which includes the territory of the municipality of Scansano, as well as parts of the municipalities of Grosseto and Magliano in Toscana towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the municipalities of Campagnatico, Roccalbegna, Semproniano e Manciano in the direction of Monte Amiata and the interior of the region. The wine, locally known as 'Morellino', almost completely made from the Sangiovese grape variety, owes its particular properties to the soil and climate of the area: the vineyards benefit from the sea breezes that mitigate the high daytime temperatures of the summer. The newest plantings, those done in the last 10 years in the Morellino di Scansano production zone, were created with a goal in mind, to improve the quality of the grapes that go into making the wine by keeping yields per plant rather low. Producers created rows that were closer together, changing them from 2.5 x 0.80 meters to 2.00 x 0.80 meters, or sometimes 2.30x.60 meters, with the number of vines planted rising to between 5.000 - 7.000 plants per hectare. In the past, the lion's share of the vines were planted with ample space between rows around 3.00x1.50 meters or 3.00x1.00 meters and a density of only 2.000 - 3.000 plants per hectare. Morellino di Scansano became a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) recognized wine starting with the 2007 harvest. The addition of the 'garantita' to the title which was bestowed on the Consortium in 1978, DOC, is the fruit of the labor of producers and growers over the last 30 years in order to reach an exceptional level of quality at every stage of wine production. In order to conform to traceability standards, the Consortium is now using the State seal instead of the one that was previously used by the Consortium starting in 2004. The use of the seal is a sign of protection for the consumer, be it the State Seal or the Consortium seal.

Saturnia is an ancient town located in the southern part of Tuscany, an area known as the Maremma. A large village, It may be a small out of the way place but it has two excellent restaurants and there is a gelateria where one can lick a delicious ice cream while watching the evening passeggiata. Or you can take it with you and visit the ancient Etruscan gateway to the town. Saturnia was in ancient times a large town of considerable importance. The porta is easily identifiable as Etruscan owing to its jigsaw pattern of irregular and vast stones so finely cut they have held together without mortar for well over two thousand years. Through this arch passed the 'new' Roman road, the Via Clodia which went from here to Rome: The basalt paving stones bear the grooves of the iron tyres of Roman and mediaeval vehicles. Devastated by malaria, Saturnia was almost abandoned until recently when the nearby spa began to revive its fortunes. Saturnia itself is a charming medieval village and the surrounding, unspoiled hills are filled with olive groves and woodlands and rich with Etruscan remains. It is about an hour and a half from Rome, an hour from Siena, and a half-hour to the sea. The area has at present gained a reputation for the high standard of its restaurants and trattorie. At the foot of the hill lies a hot (37C) water spa famous for its therapeutic qualities. Just outside from the medieval town walls the countryside spreads out: here you can take easy wonderfool walks through the perfumed Mediterranean bushes along the Albegna river. Longer walks might take you to Sovana, Sorano, Pitigliano. You may see the sea the distance, framed by the natural park of Mounts of the Uccellina and Monte Argentario. From Porto S.Stefano a daily ferry connects to Giglio and Giannutri islands; not far away are the seaside resorts of Ansedonia and Porto Ercole. The thermal spas - Hot Springs in Tuscany Southern Tuscany, in the area around Monte Amiata, has many natural hot springs. In most towns where there are natural hot springs, there is a modern spa where they bring the hot springs water into a swimming pool and you pay to use the pool. Some of these spas are outdoors and only open in summer; others are more medical type spas that are indoors and open all year. This is a waterfall with a difference - the water is hot, the temperature of a nice hot bath. It smells good and sulphurous but then you can see why the Romans believed the waters came from Hades.

It seems that the sky is upside down at the bottom, soft in the countryside of Tuscany, and the rustic houses of a village are gathered around it, curious to see this strip of blue down to earth . They are the homes of Bagno Vignoni , gathered around a pool of water that acts as a mirror to the sky , with its changing lights , let the clouds and constellations . We are one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany could be in a picture , but it's in the heart of Val d'Orcia , including in the town of San Quirico d' Orcia , in the province of Siena. For enhancing the beauty of the surrounding landscape is , that as a garland weaves lush rows of vines , rows of silvery olive groves , sunflower fields and pastures green fragrant. But the most precious treasure guarded by Bagno Vignoni are the baths , which give the town a very special aspect : the hot springs , known since Roman times , flowing from the volcanic soil and emerge in a large tub in the open. Around it, a mirror vain , gathered houses, inns and shops in the country. As a square, but made of water , the spa tub is the centerpiece of the town, and around the place the most important moments of village life. Because the thermal activity of the place became famous it was not until the Middle Ages , though the first evidence in this regard are the oldest . Gradually , over time , many historical figures have spent time in Bagno Vignoni , such as Catherine of Siena, Pope Pius II Piccolomini and Lorenzo the Maginifico . The authorities and institutions from time to time have dominated the territory they occupied the spa with care and love, and we can still benefit from cozy and comfortable facilities . Compared to the original spa , today it is not possible to swim directly into the Square of sources , but the modern facilities are just outside the center : Here you find the swimming pools fed by the same water, and you have the chance to make mud , inhalations and irrigations . The hyperthermal waters , with a temperature of 52 C, are sulfate - bicarbonate- alkaline-earthy . Although the baths of today constitute the main tourist attraction of the country, the most characteristic of Bagno Vignoni is the old town, with an old bathtub , the stone-built houses , and a fascinating maze of little streets cobbled streets. Next to the water , bright pearl in the center , stands the church of San Giovanni Battista , a beautiful sacred to nave, with a facade simple and straightforward. Inside you can admire some works of art , including a painting of the Sienese school of St. Catherine of Siena, Bagno Vignoni with the background , built in the eighteenth century. Outside, however, on the front porch , there is a small chapel dedicated to the same saint , built in 1660 and containing in origin, a fresco of the risen Christ , now moved to the church of San Giovanni Battista.

Savior, who for about a millennium had to radiate its power throughout the eastern Amiata area, only the church and the crypt. From history and legend, we learn that this monastery, Benedictine and Cistercian first, was born around 750 at the behest of the Lombard king Rachis, who used it initially to control the Via Francigena, which ran along the valley immediately below. Subsequently, the temporal power of this abbey, although very often clashing with Aldobrandeschis, the powerful nobles whose territories included the entire western side of Amiata, is great evidence in the history of Tuscany and in the relations between the Papacy and the Emperors. In this context, the historic environment, has a significant interest in the medieval town, which is preserved almost intact with narrow picturesque streets. Abbey S. Salvatore has experienced in the last two centuries the positive aspects (which were derived for the induced loss) and with negative (for the working conditions of the miners) an important mining development linked to the production of mercury, whose mines are all closed today . But Pitigliano is different ... and, despite not having the Momumento breathtaking that remains engraved in my mind, it's all the context that is almost magical enchanted. The origin of Pitigliano affected by this spell and is lost in the mists of time. Legend has it that it was founded by two young Petilio and Celiano. Petilio was the gens Petilia, an important Etruscan Roman family, while Celiano appartiena the Etruscan family of Celes Vibenna. Petilio Celiano and found nothing better than to steal the golden crown from the temple of Jupiter Stator in Rome and bring it right on the cliff of Pitigliano where, fascinated by the beauty of the place, we stayed and founded the city. We do not believe much in this legend Etruscan - Roman ... just because the origin of Pitigliano is certainly the oldest and perhaps before the Etruscan civilization itself. Today in Pitigliano is to stroll through the narrow streets, with many small craft shops, immersed in the colors of the tufa and the smell of wood-burning fireplaces ... and assure you that it is an endless pleasure, even if confined to only the historical center ... one above the tuff cliff. Beyond the walls, in the east, it is naturally extended Pitigliano new very modern, but without the charm of centuries. But what is the best time to visit Pitigliano. Surely from spring to fall, even though many of the pictures that we publish are done in the middle of winter. In particular we indicate the Torciata of St. Joseph, which takes place March 19

Since ancient Etruscans inhabited the green Tuscany, scatters precious traces of their civilization , but some centers today were born only during the Fascist era , with the reclamation of wetlands and the upgrading of the Tyrrhenian coast. This is the case of Albinia , Orbetello small fraction of 3000 inhabitants in the province of Grosseto at the time of his birth was a simple rural hamlet comprising a handful of houses, a church center , a railway station and a grain silo, wanted by the Fascist regime in a degraded area before . A name that today is no longer think of agriculture and reclaimed lands , but in a popular seaside resort , one of the most famous and appreciated in this part of Tuscany . The greater development of the town dates back to the fifties of the twentieth century, when the center was born of peripheral Colonization Ente Maremma and became the center engine of the Land Reform . The surrounding countryside was transformed into a building site, were born the rural villages of Dusty and Marseilles , were built the houses, were extended lines of communication , and in 1957 was consecrated the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie , which is still visible in the center of possession. Visitors to Albinia today are enchanted above the Tyrrhenian Sea , clear and persuasive in calmer days , impetuous and sublime when arguing with the wind and slaps the rocks on the coast. Along the coast there are wide beaches of white sand , comfortable for families, children and lovers of pure relaxation, but also the taste wild coves , ideal for those who prefer unspoilt scenery . To enchant visitors there is the special music of the Mediterranean , with the whisper of the waves, the chirping of cicadas and the cries of the seagulls. The climate is typical of the Mediterranean area , summers are hot and sunny but pleasant , refreshed by a gentle breeze that blows constantly from the sea, and winters are mild and pleasant , never too cold. Suffice it to say that in the coldest month , January , average temperatures range from a minimum of 2 C to a maximum of 9 C, while in July and August , ranging from 17 C to 30 C. Rainfall is scarce in summer and focus especially in the fall, between October and December , with an average of 9 rain days per month. But the landscape around Albinia includes not only beaches and clear blue sea : the north end of the lagoon to the west there is the so-called ' Stagnetto Albinia ,' a natural environment that welcomes winter in many species of ducks, as shoveler and mallards, and some elegant marsh harrier , and year-round home to flamingos , spoonbills and glossy ibis . The salty wind that blows in these areas makes the reed dance in the air, and gives a unique magic to the coastal landscape .

You may wonder: What does St. Patrick's Day with Orvieto? Little or nothing, so much so that this formidable hydraulic work was, originally, called Pozzo della Rocca, as close to the Albornoz fortress. Then he took the name of St. Patrick's why probably used in the second half of the eighteenth century, such as St. Patrick's Purgatory, by analogy to the underground cavity in which the well-known Irish saint withdrew to pray, and where the unbelievers that they ventured up to reach the bottom would have obtained the remission of sins and access to Paradise. The work, commissioned Antonio da Sangallo the Younger in 1527, was commissioned by Pope Clement VII, more or less simultaneously to reset the Pozzo della Cava place on the other side of the cliff, to ensure water to the city in case of siege. Completed in 1537 under Paul III Farnese denotes, for the size and accurate tem design, all the ambition to be remembered as a great and arduous undertaking. It is a work of engineering wise, preceded by hydrogeological studies, which led both to the identification of the most suitable site to get to the clayey stratum of sources, both to play brick, for a better seal, a part of the walls . Huge measures of the cylindrical drilling - 54 meters deep, with a diameter of 13 - and really found the singular architecture of the double spiral ramp that allowed the beasts of burden used to transport water to not obstruct the two-way traffic along the 248 steps; particularly striking, then, the 72 windows that allow to filter and play with the light tones of the stone. The outer part of the shaft occurs against the back of the hills surrounding the cliff, like a wide, low cylindrical building decorated by Paul III Farnese lilies, with two openings diametrically opposed to who goes and who goes. Immerse yourself in its depths greenish, take photos in low abundance to capture all effects of perspective and light, do not give up on the walls to bounce the echo of your voice. And then throw in the water, reached the bottom of the well, the little superstitious money that will bring you back, and happily, in Orvieto.

The writer Bonaventura Tecchi had called the dying city and this is partly true . Civita di Bagnoregio is in fact on a very precarious , located on a plateau of tufa , could collapse because the vast shoals of clay that support it are subject to continuous erosion . I am witness to the majestic badlands , partly covered with a poor vegetation , which stretch for miles , and at sunset give the whole landscape a lunar aspect . The wonderful village of Civita di Bagnoregio, the so-called Civita who dies is a small center where time seems to have stopped and where you can be reached only on foot along a concrete bridge built for the benefit of the few remaining citizens and tourists that the visiting from around the world. Civita di Bagnoregio is located about 1 km from Bagnoregio where you have to pass to get to the village . The parking lot is located a few hundred meters from the village , where only accessible on foot . The famous Civita di Bagnoregio is located on the volcanic products and looks almost like an island in a sea of red tuff white clays of the badlands . From the analysis of the ancient Archives have been rebuilt various times in history in which events have occurred very destructive collapse , which led to the gradual reduction of the height on which stands Civita di Bagnoregio, from 1450 to the destructive earthquake of 1738. The picturesque medieval village , known throughout the world as the dying town due to the progressive collapse of the perimeter walls and the consequent abandonment of the population over the past few centuries gives a really surreal and unforgettable. From the eastern cliff of Civita di Bagnoregio you can admire the magnificent spectacle of the Jumper , huge natural clay walls , the last track of an erosive process started thousands of years ago and have not yet ceased . And 'This is the last solution used to access the quaint town , from 1854 to date, the point at which the road passes is progressively lowered by about 25 meters. A study on the rate of retreat of the edge of the badlands erosion has detected an average of about 7 cm / year .

A crisp, strong, emerging, like a gigantic cathedral, the vast surface of the rolling Tuscan hills. Surrounded and placed in the classic Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio Tuscia two steps, Amiata has been for millennia a territory with its own autonomous prerogatives geological, historic and scenic. The lush beech forests, rocks with unusual shapes, rich and fresh springs, mines (now relegated to the museum) and a stunted mountain agriculture have given to those who live on the slopes of the mountain the proud consciousness of diversity. The cycles of history and art have variously concerned and lapped over the centuries, the Amiata. But neither the Etruscans nor Romans, nor the Lombards nor the emperors of the West, nor the historical republics of Siena and Florence, nor the bustling modernity of nearby Grosseto, have never been able to alter the spirit, the character, the magic Amiata mountain, which made the symbiotic relationship between nature, landscape and man-made. Inherited by Claudio junior, the collection now complete, he was kept and made public in 1954. The palace Faina, in piazza del Duomo, right in front of the Cathedral, was bought in the mid-nineteenth century by Count Claudio Faina senior. TOSCANA

Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its landscape, artistic heritage and important cities, first of all Florence, make Tuscany an unquestioned protagonist of world tourism. In this region, nature has many different facets, starting from the coast that alternates long and sandy beaches, like the Versilia beach, with rocky cliffs and steep headlands. The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, a crystal-clear sea and rich seabeds, are peerless. You can admire sceneries of uncontaminated nature in the Apuane Alps and in several protected areas, like Orbetello lagoon, which houses many species of migrant birds, including pink egrets. However, the most typical sceneries of the region are those that merge the beauty of nature with the millenary work of man. The amazing Gulf of Baratti and the sites of Vetulonia, Vulci and Pitigliano guard necropolis and vestiges of the Etruscan civilization, while Roselle and Cosa evoke memories of the Roman Age. Medieval villages, historical towns, castles and defence tems, rural churches (the so-called 'pievi') and beautiful abbeys, like the one of Sant'Antimo, are scattered all over the territory and their profiles stand out in the landscapes of the Crete Senesi, Orcia Valley, Garfagnana, Chianti and the Maremma. Finally, Tuscany is full of spas: Montecatini, Saturnia, Montepulciano, Monsummano and Bagno Vignoni, which offer relaxing holidays thanks to their thermal waters and well-equipped facilities for all types of treatment. The provinces of the region are: Florence (regional capital), Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
