Known more as a vacation spot or, for those who believe, as a place of the preaching of Padre Pio as a nature park, Gargano brings the imagination of millions of Italian names evocative of summer heat, white houses and atmospheres vacationer, as Peschici , Vieste, Foresta Umbra, the Tremiti Islands, the most characteristic areas of our country. Areas where there is baked in the sun and you dive into one of the most beautiful and cleanest seas in Italy (although, according to the latest estimates of Legambiente, not excel in the ranking of the cleanest). This part of Puglia is also one of the richest of different habitats and biodiversity. The reason goes back to the morphology of the spur of Italy and its history. When, between the lagoons and the land, the Appennines began to emerge - and we're talking hundreds of millions of years ago - the Gargano was not there yet, or rather was just an island, separated from the mainland. Only later would the promontory joined to the mainland to form the unmistakable spur, but the origin of island of the area, however, has marked the evolution of the environment, with its green heart, but also with a mosaic of coastal lakes, a chain of islands opposite, and a desert of stone behind which only in isolated conditions could form. It is a rich and varied habitat, as it is difficult to find in Italy. The real puzzle environments concentrated in such a small area makes the island Gargano more than a mountain, which, however, only reaches the 1,065 meters with Mount Calvo.

Cagnano is a white village perched on a rocky outcrop that allowed a defense easier. The provision of urban housing may seem a little chaotic, but responds to specific charges. The village lies on a hill which, according to tradition, was the seat of the ancient Italian city of Uriah, also mentioned by Pliny and Strabo. It would be interesting to find out what this center links tied to those of Uriah the same name located in the eastern regions. We know that during the Middle Ages the city was surrounded by walls but today there are still many traces of that period. Over the centuries the center was a feud of some families of which remains a witness in the Baronial Palace, an ancient Norman fortress, restored several times over the years. The houses and streets are positioned in such a way as to facilitate the flow of rainwater and sewage downstream, preventing the formation of unsightly puddles in the streets, as now made of pebbles and stones. Masses so the houses are lit throughout the day, painted white absorb less heat from the sun, and to deal with icy winds in winter, the houses are built next to each other protecting. They still see the remains of ancient walls that protected the residential units gathered around the Baron's Palace, also called the House, which was the gateway of the city. The foci of Capoiale and Varano opened in recent times, are two access routes to the sea and avoid stagnation of water which in the past was due to malaria. Base for submarines and seaplanes during the war, the lake is now one of the main resources of the country. The economy is based primarily on fishing and tourism is developing.

PUGLIA

Le Puglie, the Italian name of this region, is in the plural form and, in fact, this is a place that conceals many souls. The 'heel' of the boot, Apulia , as it is known in English, is,an enchanting region that lays amid nature, history, tradition, gusto and spirituality, to be visited all year round. Sea lovers can take their pick, choosing between the cliffs of Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, the meeting point between the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea, or Gallipoli, the 'Gem of Salento' and the Gargano, the 'Spur of Italy', jutting out to the clear sea water that guards the beautiful Tremiti Islands. Nature is again the protagonist in the Murgia National Park and the Gargano National Park with its wild Umbrian forest, its salt pans and lakes, the deep ravines of Laterza and the wide dolines of Altamura, which distinguish the hinterland of the region with their charming sceneries. To those who want to plunge into history, Apulia offers a wide range of places that tell the ancient origins of this land: from prehistory to Magna Graecia, from the Imperial Age to the Renaissance and the baroque splendour of Lecce and the Salento area. The provinces of the region are: Bari (regional capital), Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce and Taranto.
