Portoferraio, the pearl of the Tuscan Archipelago queen A journey full of Medici fortifications and beautiful beaches The capital and main port center, is located on the northeastern coast on a promontory that closes the bay to the north. Portoferraio is one of the oldest towns of the island, its origins date back to the Ligurians, the Etruscans and the Greeks, before becoming a Roman colony with the name of Fabricia. Portoferraio, as we can see today, was built for Cosimo I de 'Medici, who, after changing the name Cosmopolis, started in 1548, the great works of fortification. In 1814 it hosted the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte. Other places of historical and cultural interest are the Romanesque Church of St. Stefano to Trane, the Fortress of Altura Etruscan Castiglione, the house of the Mills, the Napoleonic Museum of San Martino, the first visitors to the Province of Livorno in Tuscany and the second after the Uffizi Gallery, the International Center of Art Italo Bolano , the Art Gallery and the Botanical Garden Foresiana Brass. In the town of Portoferraio there are the Terme di San Giovanni. They are part of the municipality of the town of Portoferraio S. John, Schiopparello, Warehouses, Brass, Carpani, Bagnaia, S. Martin, Biodola, Tendril and the island of Monte Cristo. Fortification - The Medici fortifications were built by the architect Giovanni Battista Bellucci. In the old harbor area through the Gate to Earth, you can visit the Forte Falcone, Forte Stella and Forte Linguella following, when possible, the walkways that connect them. Roman Villa - The remains of a Roman villa of the imperial era are just a few kilometers from Portoferraio, in the direction Bagnaia, in the area called The Caves. Cala Violina is a picturesque cove of the Maremma in the town of Scarborough which opens in the heart of the Natural Reserve of the Preserves of Scarborough. The cove, not very wide, is enclosed between two headlands and is characterized by white sand and a sea very transparent. The feature that makes it unique is that the beach emits sounds when trampled by those running through it, in the absence of sound sources of relief; This effect is noticeable in the low season, given the great crowding the place on weekends and during the summer season. This should not discourage the more curious because the place, well exposed and protected from cold north winds, you can spend hours in the sun even in winter. Can not be reached by private vehicles. During the summer there is a bike hire service.

The tower Linguella, also known as Martello tower is a tower located in Portoferraio, Elba island. Its location is at the northern end of the bay. The fortified structure was built in the early sixteenth century in the place where stood the remains of an earlier building dating back to Roman times. Its construction was commissioned by the Medici to have a more defensive structure to protect the port of Portoferraio, which, however, was used in promiscuous mode also being used as a warehouse for the storage of salt. The tower continued to perform the functions of both the visibility that the warehouse until the second half of the eighteenth century, a time when the grand house of Lorraine decided its disposal and the subsequent transformation in prison, remained in office until the opening of the late nineteenth century largest prison in the fort Longone of Porto Azzurro. An inmate of the famous tower was the anarchist Giovanni Passannante, assassin of King Umberto I, who lived in the building for 10 years, in inhumane conditions that debilitarono physically and mentally. For this reason, the structure was called at the time Passannante tower, a name still used today. Having underwent a period of decline following its final closure, the tower has been restored to its former glory thanks to a careful restoration work carried out in the late seventies of the last century. The tower Linguella has a characteristic octagonal, with a crease that is articulated in the lower part by defining the underlying basement, that six of the eight sides rests directly on the rocky shore of the sea. The top of the tower-like structure is much more prominent than the lower one, culminating in the summit with some strong brackets that surround the terrace originally used for the functions of the sighting, the center of which is a small, circular base is not visible from 'exterior of the complex. The walls appear almost entirely covered in bricks, with sections of the surrounding curtain walls in stone, who bear the northwestern corner of the tower, going to define an outer rampart structure with a sloping base, which in the past gave a further security element to the whole complex. In modern times, the Navy has installed a lighthouse on the western corner of the walls of the tower. Infrastructure, originally electrically powered, has recently been equipped with a solar panel. It is a beacon light rhythm, equipped with a 60 W lamp for night illumination of the airport area of Portoferraio.

Rosignano Maritime is characterized by wide beaches with modern bathing establishments. Particularly popular are the so-called white beaches, located on the coast between the Rosignano and the center of the village of Vada, frequented mainly by young people and that are located south of the town. Rosignano Maritime is a decent mall, but undoubtedly the reason why the city has become particularly famous lies in the particularity of its beaches: white sand beaches, almost like the tropics! It lies along the Aurelia road, which connects Livorno to Grosseto, in a southerly direction until you find the exit of Rosignano Maritime. Along this stretch of road, turning his gaze along the rugged coast, an unusual strip of white sandy beach, about four kilometers. This is precisely why this particular place is known by the name of White Beaches. The reason for the unusual color of the sand is the result of years of production of bicarbonate, which has its own factory in Rosignano Maritime, about a kilometer from the coast. The White Beaches are free-swimming. In the far south, in the direction of Vada, you can use a payment for a service of daily rent beach umbrellas, deck chairs and sun beds, a shower service and finally a small refreshment bar. The White Beaches are equipped with parking charges for cars, while the centaurs parking is free. The history of Lake S.Luce is recent and its artificial origin. Where today we admire a wetland of high natural interest, in the past extended cereal crops owned by the Monte dei Paschi di Siena, later purchased by the company Solvay Italy Spa for the construction of a reservoir in industrial value. The lake, in fact, was built between 1958 and 1960 by the company Solvay, in order to obtain a water reserve of fresh water to be used in the chemical processing plant near Rosignano Solvay. The reservoir was born of the dam, by means of a dam made entirely of clay, river End whose source is located in the northern region of the dorsal-Riparbella Chianni and about 10 km away from Lake S.Luce. Downstream of the lake End resumes its natural course and flows into the sea in White Stone City (Vada). L 'invaded is powered only by the River End by other three rivers: the stream Sabbiena, the Botro of Rotini and Botro of Riseccoli, all located in the eastern part of the lake. The water drawn from the Company Solvay occurs only in winter, when the lake overflows from the overflow because of the rainy season. The water used by the establishment is that excess and is conveyed in pipes, where, by the action of the height difference between the lake and the establishment of R. Solvay, arrives at the factory. In summer to combat the water deficit of the River End due to the dry season, the problem prior to the creation of the reservoir, are open on alternate days two dampers that are located on the bottom of the lake. Lake Santa Luce is a habitat of choice for the presence of numerous species of waterfowl. Important site along the migration route is a strategic hub in the ecological network of the territory. The Reserve has features and capabilities that make it a site of great importance in the tem of protected areas provincial and regional biodiversity, but also of the capacity and functional for environmental education broad.

It derives its name from the gnarled trees , as intricate carvings and furrowed by wrinkles of time, which in the past covered the landscape around the village and you can still admire , we are in Suvereto , which means ' forest of cork oaks ' , a charming Tuscan village of about three thousand inhabitants , in the province of Livorno. Nestled in the heart of the Val di Cornia , the village is the birthplace of many important wineries, is part of the ' City of Wine ' and is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy . The moment of greatest splendor , for this great little family that settled in the Maremma , was the thirteenth century later , in bloody wars and battles lightning , epidemics and famine, the country has experienced a period of darkness that threatened to cancel the citadel almost completely , especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries . For nearly two centuries the local reality is stuck , immobile, and between buildings Suvereto you do not see evidence of that dark period : next to the medieval palace , austere and fascinating at the same time , there are the buildings of the modern age . It dates back to the early years of the thirteenth century , for example, the Town Hall, in spite of its current appearance is the result of rearrangements that have occurred for centuries , changing the original shape. Dominating the building there is an old tower, known in the past ' bell ' and now ' watch ' because it was rung to call the elders of the village at the meeting. Above the entrance staircase there is a beautiful loggia called ' judges' loggia ' , which emit judgments and decisions were more important for citizenship. In the highest part of the village stands instead of the Fortress; cited in official documents before the year one thousand, today consists of three parts juxtaposed : the ruins of the old tower , dating back to 1164, four storeys with attics and the vestiges of a boundary wall partially lost. Various changes have been made over the centuries : in the late seventeenth century , since it was no longer as defensive military structure , the fortress focused in a state of disrepair , but was later restored until it assumed its present appearance . To see, including religious buildings , the convent of San Francesco, built at the end of the thirteenth century and of fundamental importance to the community of that time , until the Napoleonic suppression of 1808 , when it was gradually converted to civilian use . Today it remains a beautiful cloister , consisting of an open gallery with round arches , and the church of the Crucifix, adjacent to the cloister of San Francesco and built in the sixteenth century. The Crucifix is that it houses a precious wooden work in 1420 , attributed to Domenico Choirs . Particularly elderly inhabitant of Suvereto is the church of San Giusto , documented since 900 but dating in its present form , in 1189, as indicated by the ' signature ' architects Barone Amico and Bono Kicks , scratched in the left transept . Valuable portal , in Romanesque style, with the bezel and the lintel decorated .

Populonia ( an hour's drive south of Pisa ) is located at the northern end of the promontory of Piombino , privileged boarding for Elba Island. What is the special place we realize it before parking the car : on the left of the one small road that crosses the bay are some of the most beautiful Etruscan tombs of Tuscany : several sarcophagi and stone buildings from ' elegant shape in hut or mound , punctuating the soft surrounding countryside. The tombs , now part of a large archaeological park (about 80 ha. Using three different learning paths ) , came to light at the beginning of the 900 as a result of a large excavation carried out by mechanical means from an industry used to manufacture iron : we had noticed that the soil around the gulf was extremely rich in ferrous scrap , and it was decided to exploit them. Under ten meters of debris was discovered necropolis and then, some years later, on the hill west of the gulf , the acropolis of Populonia (in Etruscan Fufluna by Fufluns , god of agriculture ) . Populonia was the last city of the Dodecapoli Etruscan to be built , only one of all to look out over the sea. Between the eighth and fifth centuries BC , Populonia had the monopoly of the trade of iron ( and its derivatives ) in the Mediterranean. The ore came mainly from the island of Elba but he began to import it on the mainland when the island now ( not surprisingly called The Smoky by Pliny the Elder) had no more trees to fuel the furnaces . So he said to start production in the Gulf of Baratti. Over the centuries , the oldest cemetery of the place was abandoned and literally submerged under thousands of tons of scraps, unused by the Etruscans who obviously did not have high temperature furnaces . To the right of the road is the beach : about two feet lower than the level of the roadway, the sand is a dark red , bright against the sun , which enhances ferrous scrap ; crop up here and there large boulders semicombusti , this is clearly remains rudimentary furnaces Etruscans. We also know that the beach is the result of centuries of erosion of the Gulf Coast

The circle of Montesiepi, a jewel of Romanesque art; an abbey church that has the floor for a grass roof and the sky. Monuments scattered in a strip of the Tuscan countryside, places of curious, of scholars, of devotees. The name of San Galgano is for many today, unfortunately, only a name and perhaps only in Chiusdino the figure of blond knight hermit and his peculiar spiritual life are known and familiar. In recent times, then, was given to attend an upheaval of his affair and, from time to time, some have tried to do Galgano a priest of pagan magic cults or perhaps that the Church would have hidden under the veils of holiness Catholic; or a protester, a Patarino at odds with the church hierarchy, if not a heretic, a Cathar! Yet the biographical information on Galgano, although separate us from him more than eight centuries, are very safe, because they are based precisely on the acts of the canonization process, even the oldest canonization process that has come down, held in Montesiepi from 4 to August 7, 1185, four years after the death of the holy man, and that was presided over by Cardinal-Bishop of Santa Sabina, Konrad von Wittelsbach, who, as papal legate, listened to the testimony of twenty witnesses, including the mother same Galgano and hermits who had known him. San Galgano was born in Chiusdino in 1148 by a local noble, Guido and Dionisia. In 1179, however, being in Siena in a shop of woolen cloth, Galgano, accidentally fell asleep and in sleep appeared to him the angel Michael and his mother. The woman asked the angel to enroll the child in the heavenly hosts, and having obtained the consent Galgano enraptured with him. Already this experience had produced a profound change in the character of the young Chiusdino, a desire to change his life, which he added to it another. Still a dream again appeared in the angel Michael Galgano who ordered him to follow him, through a meadow and a river, a mountain and there, in a round chapel, Jesus, Mary and the Apostles indirizzarono the young to the hermit life. Galgano is then placed under the spiritual guidance of the monks of Malavalle, in Maremma, who invited him to form the intention to withdraw into solitude and to persevere in it. Did not fail to Galgano opposition of the mother who tried to-stoglierlo from this intention, even fidanzandolo to a girl of Civitella, in Maremma, Polyxena, perhaps accounts dell'Ardenghesca. It was going to know the bride that Galgano, towards the beginning of December 1180, had a new mystical experience: the archangel Michael, not in a dream but in fact, barred the way and gently, took the reins of the horse, accompanied him on the hill of Montesiepi Chiusdino that young, novice Antonio, chose as its Thebaid. As a sign of surrender to perpetual war Galgano drove his sword knight in the land. This gesture was for the knights of the Middle Ages a high spiritual meaning: the sword inverted remembered the cross! To no avail to dissuade him from challenging this decision the prayers of his mother Dionisia and relatives, or the arguments of the companions of debauchery, or visit dell'avvenente girlfriend, Polyxena, he indeed convinced her to take the veil (the pious maiden founded with other noble virgins, the monastery of San Prospero, near Siena).

Derived from latinoMons Scutorum which means mountain of shields or squires of the mountain, signifying the importance of the military and strategic fortified town. Things to see From the square of the Castle, on clear days you can see the islands of Gorgona, Elba, and if you are lucky, even the northern tip of Cap Corse. Letting his eyes wander down from the walls, you see a hundred huts of the village below with their roofs covered with tiles from Tuscany. Near Via del Borgo is the Civic Tower, the bottom of which dates from the twelfth century, the access point to the medieval castle near which stood the house of the tax collector. Along the perimeter of the castle you look at the imposing city walls as high as 15 meters, which retain the original masonry in sections north and south, and particularly in Guardiola, the only remaining tower. The Poggiarello is a neighborhood of houses built next to each other, rebuilt and restored after the earthquake of 1846, in memory of which was erected a small shrine dedicated to St. Antonio that meets out from the square. Among the civil buildings, we note the seventeenth-and eighteenth-century Palazzo Palazzo Ridolfi Guerrini, both belonged to families that have governed the fate of Montescudaio, as well as the Town Hall, restored several times and taken from the family residence of 1770 Clerks. The parish church of the Assumption was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1846 (the eighteenth-century marble statue was painted an Annunciation and of the Venetian school of the seventeenth century) and it is the oldest place of worship, since he inherited in 1416 the name of the suppressed convent dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located in a place still called The Abbey. Here it was founded in 1091 a monastery of women, when Gherardo V gave the abbess Imilde the church building and the cemetery that already exist in Montescudaio. After the abbey, which is situated in open countryside, the road meets a junction marked by a shrine with iron cross and wing nut on top. To the right along a cobblestone leading to the seventeenth-century source, after which meets the eighteenth century house of Scialicco and again on the asphalt road Acquaviva, an old oak tree. Continuing on, you reach the Fattoria Acquaviva Osella, then along the side of the hill, Fattoria S. John, the road has a junction that leads us to go up the street where the ridge, past the Farm The Sloe, you can see the Romanesque church of S. Lucia has a single nave of the twelfth century.

The Piazza dei Priori is the center of the medieval city, whose testimony past glory are the buildings that surround it. The oldest is the Palazzo dei Priori, the current Town Hall, by Richard of Como, whose foundations were laid in 1208 and the construction of which was completed around the middle of the thirteenth century. The facade has undergone considerable alterations: in 1472, lost Volterra municipal freedom, were shot down the loggia and the Arringo and closed the two doors on the right that gave entrance to the building; Note the crockery and coats, put up in memory of the Commissioners who ruled the city, the lions, the symbol of the Florentine dominion, on the side pillars, and between the windows of the ground floor, carved into the tufa, the size of the old village, the Canna Volterrana. While the windows of the second and third floors retain the original Romanesque structure, those of the first have been retouched and have mullioned windows surmounted by trefoil arch slightly acute. The clock, which breaks the uniformity of the facade was added much later, as the battlements erected to consolidate the crowning of the building. The ancient tower battlements ended the first with a wooden castle to hold the bell but the poor stability of the castle led the Volterrani, after the earthquake of 1846, the construction of the overlying stone structure. The front door leads into the hallway from the vault, decorated with coats of arms and medallions in enamel. On the wall of the staircase that leads to the first floor, the fresco of the Crucifixion by Pier Francesco Fiorentino (sec. XV). On the shelf of the second ramp opens the beautiful Hall of the City Council whose ceiling, wooden beams at a time, assumed its present structure in 1516 when double-cross on the back wall stands the fresco by Jacopo di Cione Orcagna : the work, completed in 1383 and severely damaged over the centuries, has been transferred to canvas, giving birth to the sinopia exposed in the adjoining Saletta of the utive. At the center of the fresco is painted the Annunciation, the sides of four figures of Saints Cosma and Damiano left, right, Right and Octavian. On the right wall a painting depicting the Marriage at Cana, by Donato Mascagni, said Frate Arsenio (1579-1631). Passed in the Saletta of the Board, you can admire the Job, yet Mascagni, the Nativity of Mary by Gian Domenico Ferretti (XVIII cent.), The eighteenth-century Adoration of the Magi by Ignazio Hugford; to observe the St. Jerome, transported here from a wall of the staircase of the palace, which critics attributed to Luca Signorelli. Notable two sculptures by contemporary artists Volterra: the Calf by Raphael Consortini and the Woman Siciliana Mino Trafeli.

Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its landscape, artistic heritage and important cities, first of all Florence, make Tuscany an unquestioned protagonist of world tourism. In this region, nature has many different facets, starting from the coast that alternates long and sandy beaches, like the Versilia beach, with rocky cliffs and steep headlands. The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, a crystal-clear sea and rich seabeds, are peerless. You can admire sceneries of uncontaminated nature in the Apuane Alps and in several protected areas, like Orbetello lagoon, which houses many species of migrant birds, including pink egrets. However, the most typical sceneries of the region are those that merge the beauty of nature with the millenary work of man. The amazing Gulf of Baratti and the sites of Vetulonia, Vulci and Pitigliano guard necropolis and vestiges of the Etruscan civilization, while Roselle and Cosa evoke memories of the Roman Age. Medieval villages, historical towns, castles and defence tems, rural churches (the so-called 'pievi') and beautiful abbeys, like the one of Sant'Antimo, are scattered all over the territory and their profiles stand out in the landscapes of the Crete Senesi, Orcia Valley, Garfagnana, Chianti and the Maremma. Finally, Tuscany is full of spas: Montecatini, Saturnia, Montepulciano, Monsummano and Bagno Vignoni, which offer relaxing holidays thanks to their thermal waters and well-equipped facilities for all types of treatment. The provinces of the region are: Florence (regional capital), Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
