In the Cilento sea merges with the sky, and Centola is difficult to distinguish the natural rock , overlooking the Mediterranean , the ancient stones of the village, arranged as sculptures forget to dial the houses of the center. To fill the homes of Centola remain, today , about five thousand inhabitants , we are in the southern slice of Campania, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano. In the summer season the population feels , like many other tourists from every part of Italy , the lure of the sea breeze , and leaves the town at the moment to settle in the nearby seaside village of Palinuro. The first traces of human settlement in Centola date from the fourth and fifth centuries AD are the remains of an ancient village , behind the promontory of Palinuro , consisting of a few houses of stone and mud-brick . But the most interesting historical sites that are worth admiring if you spend a holiday in the area , are remnants of coastal defenses : among the most impressive buildings is the Molpa Castle , built by the Goths to stop the expansion Byzantine in the sixth century , but there are countless towers that dot the coastal line, renovated in the eighteenth century after a long period of neglect. Another gem not to be missed in Centola , very special and mysterious charm , it is the medieval village of San Severino . It is a village founded in 1200, has arisen little by little around the castle founded in 1045 by the Norman Turgisio . Perched on the cliff of the Devil's Throat and lapped , a little lower, by the river Mingardo , the village in the Middle Ages represented a great defensive fortress , protected from enemy attack. Today the ancient village is deserted , many citizens have preferred to move to the area around the railway town , and for many years the houses were abandoned ravages of time . We still recognize the houses of the past, the cobbled streets and the castle, and you're trying to re-evaluate the settlement with thematic tours and events. Very impressive nativity scene that is set here every December 28. But do not be fooled sull'indole Centola : this is not a sleepy town , and there are neither funny nor occasions the historical and artistic attractions . See, for example, the Capuchin convent, the guardian of a magnificent Baroque altar in carved wood, or the Baron's Palace Lupo erected in the thirteenth century by Ludwig Horace Bonifacio Lupo, is a beautiful invoice Lombard . Do not miss the Baron's Palace Rinaldi , the Bell Tower 893 and the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra , built in the early seventeenth century precious Baroque style , decorated inside with a silver cross and elegant stucco . History lovers will appreciate the ancient Atiquarium , the archaeological museum of Centola , housed in a building of the '60s created specifically to accommodate the large amount of finds from the area , at the behest of the Provincial Tourism Salerno. Ceramics and obsidian tools are just some of the objects, dating back six thousand years ago , found in the excavations of Centola and vicinity since 1948 .

Released by Acciaroli, on the main road, following a winding path in a southerly direction between hills and sea of bright green and blue different locations across the gulfs in front of Elea-Velia and Palinuro, we arrive at Poplars. At the time of Augustus, shortly before the modern town, at the mouth of the river Aude, there was a harbor capable of accommodating ships military was one of the ports of the kora of Velia, which says Strabo, was subsequently active until fourteenth century as a possession of the Abbey of Cava. On the slopes adjacent, probably since the time of colonization of Velia, he had to develop the life of a village of fishermen and craftsmen. The Gothic-Byzantine War of 535-553 and subsequent fall of Velia led to the momentary abandonment of the port, while the arrival of the Lombards would have resulted in the total desolation of the land. The recovery in the next century, was due to immigration of Greek monks who, protected by the Lombard dukes, tilled the land, sought each sources and welcomed the refugees, by starting small businesses from the old docks. These communities came together in kiosks, designed as places of worship and centers of socio-economic life, worshiped, also, the Madonna, Odighitria: namely, the one who leads the way. The growth of nuclei as Poplars in the Cilento lasted until the middle of the ninth century, when they settled in Agropoli Licosa and the Saracens, harbingers of terrible years. The ports represented the outlet to the sea of the Greek monasteries, including that of Santa Maria dei Poplars and it is news in a document of 994 (9): the name therein mentioned, for the first time, refers to the trees that, in the Middle Ages, lush vegetated along the river Aude. Since 1123, following the founding of Castellabate, the possessions of the abbey of Cava, placed under the control of an era benefited from the short but remarkable flourishing, interrupted by the War of the Vespers of the years 1282 to 1302 and a long period after dense disasters and dangerous attacks. The first families of the seventeenth century were those of Poplars at Torrieri and tavernaro, ie, a customs officer who ran the inn is set in a caupona, or a rudimentary fortified house. Following the Carmelite order is pushed on the shore of Poplars in founding a chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for the spiritual and material assistance to farmers and fishermen. This must have taken place in 1610. Chapel of Poplars became a destination for pilgrims for the painting of the Madonna, believed to be miraculous and this influx gave rise to a small fair in conjunction with the annual celebration of July 16. The Vinciprova Palace, was built by Ripoli Pollica, family originally from Catalonia, addivenuta to cruel and legendary disputes with other families of that place. Following the Mayor Sodano, who remained in office until 1871, it was bought by the state and was later traded to the Vinciprova OMIGNANO, which he remembers Leo, who was one of the Thousand following Garibaldi. A few years ago, with the death of the last heir, became the property of the City of Pollica. Poplars is proposed to the public with choices cultural tourism different from the usual places, thanks to the presence of world-class personalities who have chosen it as a residence for leisure. The Poplars, mentioned in the book Passing the Cilento by Arthur John Strutt and Journey in the South by Giuseppe Ungaretti beginning of the 70s, has been home to international congresses and symposia on such topics as the relationship between diet and health or the importance of proper nutrition for the prevention of various human diseases, as well as for the simultaneous presence of world-renowned scholars. The artichoke of Paestum IGP, also known as Tondo di Paestum, from the name of the local from which it derives, is due to the genetic group of the artichokes type Romanesco. The appearance of its rounded flower heads, their high compactness, the absence of spines on the bracts are the principal qualitative characteristics and of the peculiar Paestum artichokes, who have consecrated also his reputation among consumers. Even the character of early maturation can be considered a positive element conferred by the environment of cultivation, the Piana del Sele, which allows the artichoke of Paestum to be on the market before any other type of artichoke Romanesco. Other typical characteristics of the product are: an average size of flower heads (no more than 4 per stem per kg of product), peduncle of less than 10 cm, green color with shades of violet-pinkish, fleshy receptacle and particularly tasty. The commercial features of the artichoke of Paestum described above are also the result of careful and laborious cultivation technique that agricultural operators of the Piana del Sele have honed over decades. The Caves are Alburni Mountains, near the river Tanagro, immersed in the heart of a spectacular nature. The entire complex of caves extending for a length of about three thousand feet, suspended between land and water, alternating so striking to excite anyone. What makes these unique caves is the underground river Negro, a river coming from deepest offering a fascinating and unusual boat trip immersed in a magical silence, where light and shadow meet and mingle in a game ever again, remaining enchanted by the roar of the great natural waterfall. The main processes involved in the formation of caves (note the phenomena of speleogenesis) can be grouped as follows: & Action of the aqueous solutions, with their ability to exert corrosion on the limestone and redeposit calcium carbonate in the form of concretions; & action of the water as they operate mechanical erosion on the bed of the underground rivers and exercise the transport and deposition of sediments; & action of gravity which causes collapse of the vaults and the walls of the cavity already formed; resulting clumps of debris, often of large blocks, to the ground. In addition, major geological factors responsible for the genesis, distribution, orientation and evolution of karst caves are the tectonic elements, and in particular: fractures, folds, faults, the position and thickness of the layers. Fractures play an important role: first, let the rock outcropping to offer an inclined surface water chemically active wider on which to exercise their erosive power; secondly allow the dissolution of also affect the inside of the limestone mass over the surface. So doing, the tems of fracturing strongly influence the distribution and the direction of greatest development of underground cavities. However, as part of a massive carbonate fractures not all play the same role: the influence of these towards the cavity depends strongly on their opening, tilt and orientation. In fact, the water infiltration, crossing the area of unsaturated soil (not filled with water), generally prefer more open and inclined fractures, or verticali.Il recognition of the importance of archaeological Caves of Perth-Auletta is attributable to first excavations between 1897 and 1898 by Paul and John Carucci patrons. The two gave different interpretations of the human presence in the cavity: the first emphasized the purely residential, while the second character of worship. In subsequent excavations was found a wooden structure similar to a true Canadian. And 'with modern investigations and with the lowering of the level of the reservoir created by the exploitation of hyower underground stream that is read in the presence of otherwise invisible wooden structures, with the recovery of submerged materials.

The beach of fossil dunes In Saline you can admire spectacular examples of fossil dunes that form a natural environment very unique, populated by plant organisms that together constitute a unique plant communities, extremely sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance and, therefore, to be protected. Between the Early Cretaceous (130 million years) and the Pleistocene (2 million years), each flood rainwater transported at sea large amount of terrigenous material. These created along the coast, and a large tract in the sea, a cloud of murky that, with times varying depending on the size of the particle size materials transported, was deposited on the deep seabed. For the first were deposited grains heavier, then lighter ones gradually, until the clay dust. When the crystal clear waters of the sea returned, began a kind of marine sedimentation, produced by microorganisms, which covered everything with a layer of calcareous material more or less often, depending on the time he spent before another flood intorbidisse that stretch of sea, and a repeat new series of deposits. With the marine transgressions, the masses of these deposits, were transferred on pre-existing carbonate platform. On this new landscape configuration of the NO side of the peninsula silentina, the existing rivers, sometimes modified in their ancient giaciture for geomorphological events occurred, they continued the ancient work of soil erosion, and transport of materials at sea eroded. There have been so deposited sands, pebbles and those stranded in the formation of dunes from the sea, remained as fossil evidence of one of the many variations of this sea level imposed by glaciation or in lifting the profile of the area. The beach Buondormire For those who go on holiday in the Cilento, in the province of Salerno, I recommend taking the boat to the port of Palinuro to make the tour of the caves along the coast. The ideal, then, you get to leave the boat in the beach of the Good sleep, facing the islet of the Rabbit, which is, in fact, an island which has the typical shape of a rabbit. In the first, he argues that it originates from the Latin word evening (bar, bar to close the door), referring to the hills surrounding the town and close valleys and plains. In the second, however, it is considered that the name may derive from the name of the instruments (note greenhouses, consisting of two large handles joined by a large toothed blade.) Between 400 and 273 forward was occupied by an Italic population of Lucania. In 273 it became a Roman colony under the name of Paestum. But there is no doubt that the foundation of the city was preceded by the installation of a commercial farm on the left bank and at the mouth of the river Silaros and that the conditions of the terrain induced malarial then the primitive settlers to move the town to the east, on a bench calcareous slightly raised on the plains and on the coast, along the course of another smaller river (the Salty river or Capofiume). Silaros developed by the plant on the primitive sea and river ports of the city and it was built at the Temple of Hera of Argos, which soon became one of the largest and most revered shrines of ancient Italy: about 50 stages separated the city from the Heraion and the his emporium on fiume.La end of the Roman Empire coincided roughly with the end of the city. Around 500 CE, in fact, following an outbreak of malaria, aggravated by the unhealthiness of the territory, the inhabitants gradually abandoned the city. Palinuro is the largest fraction of Centola , in the province of Salerno , Campania. It is a seaside resort in southern Cilento quite well known , whose name is linked to a character of the Aeneid , the legendary Palinuro, helmsman of the fleet of Aeneas. Palinuro personifies the beloved helmsman of Aeneas , who loses his life because the god of sleep does sleep with music and sweet words and then throws him into the water. So come true what fate had always been told to ensure that Aeneas reaches Lazio, one of them, a Trojan will die. Aeneas became aware of the lack of his search but not finding imagines his death. In fact, as told in the Aeneid, Palinuro swims up to the coast, where he is ed by Velini and left unburied on the shore of the sea , which is why , when Aeneas descends to the underworld and meets the ghost of his helmsman , this begs to look for the body and give him a decent burial , so that his soul may rest in peace. Surrounded by the lush nature of the Cilento National Park , Cape Palinuro is thrown vertically into the Tyrrhenian Sea , in one of the best preserved stretches of coastline , protected and pristine southern Italy. High coasts , beaches and sandy coves interspersed along the miles of coastline. A shore beaches immediately leave space to the hills , full of olive groves , which are caught then along narrow valleys and gorges up to the high mountains of the Cilento , enclosing villages along their slopes and works of art and life of the peoples of the past. The beautiful caves of Capo Palinuro , which is now reflected in the crystal clear sea , about 130,000 years ago ( Riss glaciation ) , were surrounded by a completely different landscape . The retreating sea for hundreds of meters from where the coast line had given way to dense forests flecked with large clearings , fauna was predominantly made up of mountain goats, deer, horses, deer , bears and cave lions , while the caves were shelter of ' Homo erectus. All this is documented by the fossil record , particularly in the famous Cala Bones can be observed , set in the rock and polished by the sea , the bones of such an incredible zoo. More regularly primitive man is recorded in the Neolithic ( fourth millennium ) , numerous remains of obsidian tools , found in the fossil dune , suggest Palinuro as a trading station with the Eolie Islands from which came the natural glass .

Lagonegro is an Italian town of 5,651 inhabitants in the province of Potenza, in Basilicata. The origins of the town are controversial, but the most popular theory derives the village by a Roman settlement called Vicus Mendicoleius; it seems that even just outside the village there is a small church (called the Rosary) sort of a pagan temple dedicated to Juno. In the eighth century evidently took place the settlement of Basilian monks of Byzantine origin or Bulgarian on the cliff of the castle. Maybe the church of San Nicola towering over the village, dating from the ninth-tenth century, is the work leading to the establishment of these preachers. At about this time the village is mentioned with its current name apparently derives from the dark waters of a lake located near the Apennines, and then disappeared. The village is surrounded in the IX-X century by walls and towers of which still remain visible enchanting tracks. Of these works is very impressive the entrance door to the village called Iron Gate which was rebuilt in stone in 1552, above the door there is the coat of arms of the city post-feudal: St. Michael the Archangel slaying the dragon. Beginning in 968, its territories, were one of the turme thema of Lucania. In the medieval period, the so-called land was part of Lagonegro, County of Lauria. Subsequently passed in 1463 in Wenceslas Sanseverino, twelfth Earl of Lauria. Not having sons ammoglio' his daughter Luisia with Barnabas Sanseverino, brother of Robert Prince of Salerno, giving her a dowry of the sub-feud Lauria consisting Lauria, Ursomarso, Layno, Castelluccio, Trecchina and gave his reasons above Torturella, Cuccaro, Lagoniro, Rocca , Policastro, Rivello, Scalea and Bervicaro. On 11 August 1498, King Frederick gave Lagonegro Gaspare Saragusio, donated to the rebellion of William Sanseverino, of which the daughter Giovanna then sold it to Vincenzo Caraffa. In 1548 the jug sold it to James Cossa with Pact retrovenderla. In 1550 Vincenzo Caraffa yielded the straight to buy it for 5000 ducats to Luigi Caraffa, who then bought it for 20,000 ducats. The citizens, however in 1559 it ricomprarono, thus becoming state town. More recently, in 1853, stayed at Lagonegro the King of Naples, Ferdinand II.

The protected geographical designation White Fig Cilento refers to the dried product of the cultivar Dottato, prized varieties of fig spread throughout the South. In particular, the protected product is derived from a specific ecotype cultivar Dottato, who went by ing and spreading in the Cilento over the centuries: the Bianco del Cilento. Product with unique features and of absolute value, appreciated abroad, the White Fig Cilento PDO owes its name to the light yellow uniform of the peel of the dried fruit, which becomes brown for the fruits that have undergone a process of baking. The flesh is typically pasty consistency, taste very sweet, amber yellow, with achenes mostly empty receptacle interior almost entirely full. These features, which are excellent for the commercial category of dried figs, are precisely the traits that qualify the Bianco del Cilento DOP markets. Packed in brine in different shapes (cylindrical, crown, circular, bags) Cilento figs are also marketed in the old way, that is placed in bulk in baskets made of material of plant that can be up to twenty pounds. A traditional preparation still in use is the one that sees the figs fences, that is tucked into two parallel wooden slats to form the spatula or mustaccioli. The Fico Bianco del Cilento PDO is marketed also stuffed with almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, fennel seeds, citrus peels (ingredients coming from the same production area) or covered with chocolate, or even dipped in rum, with 'goal of expanding its product offer, especially at Christmas time. Increasingly sought are also figs dried and then baked golden, especially those stuffed. Fine, but increasingly rare for the high costs of preparation, are figs worlds, without skin, the color clear tending to pure white and taste delicious. The valuable characteristics of the product as described are due not only to the intrinsic qualities of the variety Dottato, also the environment of cultivation and processing of fruits. In fact, the moderating effect of the sea and the barrier placed by the Apennines to the cold winter air currents from the north-east, along with good soil fertility and an excellent rainfall pattern are the ideal climatic conditions for the production of figs Cilento. Furthermore, it should be emphasized that in the right place, in addition to the crop, also the phases of drying and processing of the product are held in full in the geographical area of production, at agricultural structures and rural buildings, in a harmonic process of interaction between the product, man and environment. The ease of cultivation and plant resistance to adverse Phytopathology, then, have allowed the cultivation of even earn the appreciation of the Cilento farmer who has always placed the fig tree in his own company, specializing in culture or subsidiary. It should not be forgotten, also, the role played by this crop in the maintenance of the landscape and the countryside, from which now seems almost inseparable.

CAMPANIA

Campania is one of the regions in Southern Italy and stretches along the Tyrrhenian Sea, from the mouth of the Garigliano River to the Gulf of Policastro. The mildness of the climate, the beauty of the coasts, the richness of its art and history and the love for food make Campania an enjoyable land. The journey starts from the sea, uncontested king of the region, with its intense colours, its coasts rich in bays, coves and rock faces, as well as the islands of Capri and Ischia, true natural masterpieces with even more charm by the flourishing Mediterranean vegetation, interrupted by some small yet pretty towns where to spend your holidays, amid the history and traditions of Campania. How can we forget the monument of nature that dominates this region: the Vesuvius, dark and mysterious, loved for its beauty and feared for its power. Then Naples, famous worldwide for the intensity and passion of its music, that just like the town, mingles cultural and popular, sacred and profane, joyful and melancholic aspects. And Sorrento, a town that lays on a terrace of tuff falling sheer to the sea. In this view of paradise, indented and inaccessible coasts alternate to small and hidden beaches, creating a unique scenery. Here, the work of man was grand. The roughest areas are now made up of a series of terraces sloping down to the sea, used for the cultivation of citrus, olive trees and vines. These gardens give off heady scents of oranges, lemons and orange-blossoms. Music, sea, entertainment and nature, but also history and culture. Visiting places like Paestum, Ercolano, Pompei, the Chartreuse of Padula or the Royal Palace of Caserta is an unforget experience. The provinces of Campania are: Naples (region capital), Caserta, Benevento, Avellino and Salerno.
