The sanctuary of St. Romedius is a shrine dedicated to the figure of St. Romedius - situated on a steep rock outcrop, the beautiful natural scenery of the Val di Non, in the municipality of Coredo. The sanctuary consists of five churches built over a period of about nine hundred years between 1000 and 1918. The five churches were built in the shelter of a steep rock face and are joined together by a spectacular staircase of 130 steps. It is visited every year by about 200,000 people, and is guarded by two brothers of the Order of St. Francis of Assisi. Romedius lived between the fourth and fifth centuries, the heir of a wealthy Bavarian family, lord of a castle near Innsbruck and owner of saline in the valley; After a pilgrimage to Rome, he gave all his possessions to the church and retired to a hermitage in the Val di Non in some caves still exist today in the vicinity of the sanctuary. They followed him two companions, Abraham and David. It is said that one day, having to go to Trento to greet Vigilio, then bishop of the city, he asked David to saddle the horse: the disciple returned with the news that a bear had mauled the horse. Romedius was unimpressed and ordered him to saddle the bear, which - here's the miracle - meekly allowed himself to put the saddle, then Romedius leading up to Trent. This episode is remembered by a wooden statue placed next to a triumphal arch at the entrance of the Sanctuary. For over five hundred years, the rock that housed the ancient shrine stood naked, with a staircase discovery and some newsstands now disappeared. At the bottom were the stables, shelters for pilgrims and the caretaker's cottage. The original church dedicated to St. Romedius was built around 1000 on the tomb of the saint, with stones brought up there by the ancient pilgrims. The cult of St Romedius was officially recognized by the Church in 1300 and the devotion to the Holy town increased greatly in the fifteenth century, when the sanctuary was crowded by many pilgrims who brought votive offerings. In 1489 began the construction of the second church dedicated to St. George. Then in 1514 it was built the church of St. Michael in 1536 and the main church of St. Romedius. In the same period (sixteenth century) is the bell tower, still in Gothic-Cles. For the last was erected in 1918, the church of the Addolorata, as a sign of thanks to the Virgin for the newfound peace after the tragedy of the First World War. In 1700 the sanctuary dressed to the nines, accompanying the pilgrim visitor to the threshold of the tomb of the holy hermit Romedius. Buildings are rebuilt from scratch at the ground floor used for the reception of pilgrims, at the stalls and barns. The churches are embraced with the construction of 'apartment Counts and the gallery (1725), the sacristy and the library at the top. The second part of the staircase is covered and then animated with the newsstands of the mysteries of Christ's passion. Above the chapel of St. George rising two-bedroom dwelling; Finally, the entrance arch is erected on the sacred place (1770). During the twentieth century have been added, as well as the chapel of the parking lot with the shrine of St. Romedius (1907) and the enclosure for the Bears (1990). The bears were kept here transferred to the wildlife park Spormaggiore. Only at the beginning of 2013 a bear called Bruno, from the Abruzzo National Park was transferred to the sanctuary.

In western Dolomites, only six kilometres from Nova Levante, there is a small, emerald green mountain lake, in which the Catinaccio and Latemar are reflected: lake Carezza. Due to its impressing colours, in Ladin language it is called ''''Lec de Ergobando'''' (rainbow lake). But its colours are not the only reason& According to legends, once upon a time there was a beautiful mermaid living in the lake, which wizard Masare was in love with. In order to seduce her, the which Lanwerda advises him to dress up as jewel merchant and throw a rainbow from Catinaccio to Latemar. That is also what he did, but he forgot to dress up. That is why the mermaid detected him and forever disappeared in the lake. The wizard was angry and threw all the pieces of the rainbow as well as the jewels into the lake. That''''s why it still features rainbow colours& The lake is fed by subterraneous springs from the Latemar mountian chain and his water level is constantly changing. The highest level is achived in spring, the lowest level in October. In summer months the lake is fed by snow melt. In winter the ''''Dolomite fairytale lake'''' is frozen and covered by snow, which is very impressing. If you would like to relax, enjoy a walk round the lake. Not far from Lago di Carezza, there is the Carezza Golf Club - a 9-hole golf course embedded in great scenery.

The term 'speck' first appears in Tyrol's history in documents dated back to the 18th century. However, the word makes was first used under different names and definitions in the trade registers and butchers' ordinance as far back as the year 1200. The term has its roots in the Middle High German word 'spec' and the Ancient High German word 'spek' and actually translates into 'something thick, fat.' South Tyrol's history documents that South Tyrolean farmers originally cured speck to preserve the meat. The ham was intended for home consumption. Traditionally, pigs were slaughtered during the Christmas Season. The production of speck ensured that farmer's had a supply of preserved meat for the entire year. The ham recipe was carefully guarded and handed down from generation to generation. The ancestral seasoning secrets from more than 100 years ago still give the speck its typical taste today. Speck Alto Adige is in no way related to the standard fatty pork belly speck described by the common German term. Speck is the result of a combination of two methods used to preserve meat: the standard Mediterranean style curing process for raw ham and smoking, which is a process typically used in Northern Europe. As a result, a unique South Tyrolean ham was created based on the traditional rule 'a little salt, a little smoke and a lot of fresh air.' Speck is an ingredient used in numerous typical South Tyrolean dishes, such as the South Tyrolean Speck Dumplings. In South Tyrol, this ham paired with bread and wine, is the main component in the genuine 'Marende' and the typical South Tyrolean snack platter. Over the centuries, Speck Alto Adige has been continually upgraded and is now considered a star ingredient by many award-winning chefs.

The brand Mela Alto Adige IGP (German Sudtiroler Apfel ggA) indicates the apples grown in Alto Adige with traditional production methods. South Tyrol is the largest area devoted to European concentrated fruit. Of the more than a dozen varieties of apples grown locally eleven have obtained in 2005 the European mark of protected geographical indication (PGI) and are therefore recognized throughout Europe as regional specialties. The brand Mela Alto Adige IGP is used by all distributors in South Tyrol for the export product. It seems that the first apple trees in Europe have developed in Kazakhstan, Central Asia. Apples arrived later in Greece along the Silk Road, and finally reached even the Tyrol at the time of the Roman conquests. In this area, the cultivation of apples took place in the Middle Ages, mostly at the hands of the monasteries, which were then custodians of knowledge relating to methods of cultivation and the different varieties of the fruit. Even farming families exploited for several centuries the apple for their own self-subsistence. Even then, the South Tyrolean apple was exported to the north across the Alpine passes. The construction of a railway line that ran through the Brenner, in 1867, facilitated further exports. Between 1880 and 1890, the South Tyrolean fruit growers won a certain amount of land for cultivation by regulating the course of the Adige and the subsequent reclamation of wetlands surrounding. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, were born at last the first cooperatives of fruit growers. Since then, the cultivation of apples in South Tyrol has always had a great importance.

TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE

Trentino Alto Adige is situated in the very north of Italy bordering Austria and Switzerland and is the best known for the beauty of its peaks. Its territory stretches from the Adamello-Brenta range and the peaks of Ortles and Cevedale to the most striking mountains in Europe: the Dolomites of the Fassa Valley, Brenta, Gardena Valley, Fiemme Valley and Pale di San Martino. This setting encloses an extraordinary variety of landscapes: magnificent snow-capped mountain tops, woods, wide valleys, streams, lakes, enchanting light play between the spires of the Dolomites, typical villages with soaring bell towers, and the myriad shades of truly unspoilt nature. Hundreds of kilometres of ski slopes make this region a cutting-edge tourist destination - Madonna di Campiglio, Canazei, Moena, San Martino di Castrozza are the best known resorts, popular in both winter and summer for holidays surrounded by nature, sport and fun. The landscape of Lake Garda is particularly picturesque; the lake narrows in Trentino, and looks like a fiord between the high mountains. Land of confluence and meeting point between Latin and Nordic worlds, Trentino Alto Adige is the guardian of a remarkable cultural heritage, made up of prehistoric evidence, charming castles, sanctuaries and towns of great historical and artistic significance. There are a number of spa towns offering treatments and therapies, of which Merano, Lèvico Terme, Peio, Rabbi and Comano Terme are the best known. The provinces of the region are Bolzano and Trento.
