In the eleventh century we have the first evidence of written sources that speak of the urban settlement of Campillia even though it is definitely from the middle of the twelfth century, when the historical events influenced the town of Pisa , which we start talking more and more of the city. The first official document appointing Campiglia is in 1004 : it is the act of Conte Gherardo II Gherardesca that gives the monastery of St. Maria Serena , near Chiusdino , half of the castle of Campiglia with its territory and the church , along with shares of the nearby castles of Acquaviva , Biserno , and the castle of Monte Calvo ( the fortress now called New Year's Eve ) . Rocca San Silvestro , located on the slopes of Mount Calvi, was a fortified village , founded in the tenth or eleventh century by the family of the Gherardesca to control the mines of copper and lead and silver in the area, exploited since Etruscan times . The village retains a portion surrounded by high walls, with the manor house and a church , and the lower village , defended by another boundary stone walls and has production facilities ( mill, kilns) .

Cala di Forno is one of the most beautiful beaches of Tuscany (4 sails LegAmbiente), and if there are few who know it, because summer is unreachable, off-limits, verboten, forbidden, no way. Not only is forbidden, but it is also nestled between two headlands, within the Natural Park of Maremma (also known as the Park dell'Uccellina), and between Talamone Principana at Sea, in the province of Grosseto. So far, the beach was still closed to the public from 15 May to 15 September, in practice, precluded lovers of the sea and sunbathing, and known only to the most curious among the trekkers, able to get 13 miles of track from the Albarese to the beach, and certainly not for bathing. Around this beach, there has been a long hard struggle, between the proponents, pure and hard, preservation of the environment, and who wants to make accessible the area, including tourism. No need to worry because, at least for now, there will be an invasion of the field, since the compromise reached to open the beach in summer, is one of a limited number; no more than 50 people per day. In short, they will not be a beach for everyone, partly because the Cala del Forno Expirience has a cost: 50 Euro per person for the privilege of getting to sea, with shuttle service (only an hour's hike, compared to 4 to put into account normally), guide and final toast included.

The circle of Montesiepi, a jewel of Romanesque art; an abbey church that has the floor for a grass roof and the sky. Monuments scattered in a strip of the Tuscan countryside, places of curious, of scholars, of devotees. The name of San Galgano is for many today, unfortunately, only a name and perhaps only in Chiusdino the figure of blond knight hermit and his peculiar spiritual life are known and familiar. In recent times, then, was given to attend an upheaval of his affair and, from time to time, some have tried to do Galgano a priest of pagan magic cults or perhaps that the Church would have hidden under the veils of holiness Catholic; or a protester, a Patarino at odds with the church hierarchy, if not a heretic, a Cathar! Yet the biographical information on Galgano, although separate us from him more than eight centuries, are very safe, because they are based precisely on the acts of the canonization process, even the oldest canonization process that has come down, held in Montesiepi from 4 to August 7, 1185, four years after the death of the holy man, and that was presided over by Cardinal-Bishop of Santa Sabina, Konrad von Wittelsbach, who, as papal legate, listened to the testimony of twenty witnesses, including the mother same Galgano and hermits who had known him. San Galgano was born in Chiusdino in 1148 by a local noble, Guido and Dionisia. In 1179, however, being in Siena in a shop of woolen cloth, Galgano, accidentally fell asleep and in sleep appeared to him the angel Michael and his mother. The woman asked the angel to enroll the child in the heavenly hosts, and having obtained the consent Galgano enraptured with him. Already this experience had produced a profound change in the character of the young Chiusdino, a desire to change his life, which he added to it another. Still a dream again appeared in the angel Michael Galgano who ordered him to follow him, through a meadow and a river, a mountain and there, in a round chapel, Jesus, Mary and the Apostles indirizzarono the young to the hermit life. Galgano is then placed under the spiritual guidance of the monks of Malavalle, in Maremma, who invited him to form the intention to withdraw into solitude and to persevere in it. Did not fail to Galgano opposition of the mother who tried to-stoglierlo from this intention, even fidanzandolo to a girl of Civitella, in Maremma, Polyxena, perhaps accounts dell'Ardenghesca. It was going to know the bride that Galgano, towards the beginning of December 1180, had a new mystical experience: the archangel Michael, not in a dream but in fact, barred the way and gently, took the reins of the horse, accompanied him on the hill of Montesiepi Chiusdino that young, novice Antonio, chose as its Thebaid. As a sign of surrender to perpetual war Galgano drove his sword knight in the land. This gesture was for the knights of the Middle Ages a high spiritual meaning: the sword inverted remembered the cross! To no avail to dissuade him from challenging this decision the prayers of his mother Dionisia and relatives, or the arguments of the companions of debauchery, or visit dell'avvenente girlfriend, Polyxena, he indeed convinced her to take the veil (the pious maiden founded with other noble virgins, the monastery of San Prospero, near Siena).

Cala Violina is a picturesque cove of the Maremma in the town of Scarborough which opens in the heart of the Natural Reserve of the Preserves of Scarborough. The cove, not very wide, is enclosed between two headlands and is characterized by white sand and a sea very transparent. The feature that makes it unique is that the beach emits sounds when trampled by those running through it, in the absence of sound sources of relief; This effect is noticeable in the low season, given the great crowding the place on weekends and during the summer season. This should not discourage the more curious because the place, well exposed and protected from cold north winds, you can spend hours in the sun even in winter. Can not be reached by private vehicles. During the summer there is a bike hire service.

Populonia ( an hour's drive south of Pisa ) is located at the northern end of the promontory of Piombino , privileged boarding for Elba Island. What is the special place we realize it before parking the car : on the left of the one small road that crosses the bay are some of the most beautiful Etruscan tombs of Tuscany : several sarcophagi and stone buildings from ' elegant shape in hut or mound , punctuating the soft surrounding countryside. The tombs , now part of a large archaeological park (about 80 ha. Using three different learning paths ) , came to light at the beginning of the 900 as a result of a large excavation carried out by mechanical means from an industry used to manufacture iron : we had noticed that the soil around the gulf was extremely rich in ferrous scrap , and it was decided to exploit them. Under ten meters of debris was discovered necropolis and then, some years later, on the hill west of the gulf , the acropolis of Populonia (in Etruscan Fufluna by Fufluns , god of agriculture ) . Populonia was the last city of the Dodecapoli Etruscan to be built , only one of all to look out over the sea. Between the eighth and fifth centuries BC , Populonia had the monopoly of the trade of iron ( and its derivatives ) in the Mediterranean. The ore came mainly from the island of Elba but he began to import it on the mainland when the island now ( not surprisingly called The Smoky by Pliny the Elder) had no more trees to fuel the furnaces . So he said to start production in the Gulf of Baratti. Over the centuries , the oldest cemetery of the place was abandoned and literally submerged under thousands of tons of scraps, unused by the Etruscans who obviously did not have high temperature furnaces . To the right of the road is the beach : about two feet lower than the level of the roadway, the sand is a dark red , bright against the sun , which enhances ferrous scrap ; crop up here and there large boulders semicombusti , this is clearly remains rudimentary furnaces Etruscans. We also know that the beach is the result of centuries of erosion of the Gulf Coast

The moment of greatest splendor , for this great little family that settled in the Maremma , was the thirteenth century later , in bloody wars and battles lightning , epidemics and famine, the country has experienced a period of darkness that threatened to cancel the citadel almost completely , especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries . For nearly two centuries the local reality is stuck , immobile, and between buildings Suvereto you do not see evidence of that dark period : next to the medieval palace , austere and fascinating at the same time , there are the buildings of the modern age .
